2022 International AES Automotive Audio Conference
Headed for Detroit, June 8-10
The Audio Engineering Society (AES) hits the road to the home of the US automotive industry for the AES 2022 International Automotive Audio Conference from June 8-10 at the Dearborn Inn, MI. In addition to Keynote addresses by industry leaders from Dirac and Dolby, attendees will be immersed in a wide range of topics and technologies, including automotive acoustics, virtual speaker integration, modeling and measurement, system architecture, and hardware, and supply chain and sourcing issues, among others.

Anyone in automotive audio product development and systems should be planning on attending (and packing) for next week’s in-person live AES International Automotive Audio Conference. A complete overview of state-of-the-art system designs and engineering topics will be addressed in presentations and workshops. At the event, the AES Audio Product Education Institute is presenting a three-day conference track and special events, reinforcing the general AES conference program. Taking place at the Dearborn Inn, this will be a unique opportunity for the automotive product development and engineering community.
The Audio Engineering Society will host the AES 2022 International Automotive Audio Conference, June 8–10 in Detroit, MI.
For product developers, regular AES events may feel too focused on mixing and post-production, and maybe too many exhibitors displaying their large microphones. To expand our community, the Audio Product Education Institute (APEI) initiative is committed to furthering the knowledge and skills of professionals involved in the development of audio products, focusing on practices and technologies involved in developing and bringing audio products to market.

The Product Development Track began in 2014 initiated by Scott Leslie at the 137th AES Convention and has continued to grow to become one of the most attended tracks during AES conventions.
APEI’s Committee is composed of long-term professionals in the audio product development area and supports the huge demand for development professionals with multidisciplinary and highly specialized skills. APEI aims to offer the audio-specific and hands-on development skills that developers, manufacturers, and supply chain partners need to advance at the demanding pace of new audio application segments. As Audio has become a major component in many new product areas, APEI is offering specific audio training and the opportunity to learn best practices to new and seasoned professionals from any product areas.
Highlights for the Conference include the Keynote sessions that will begin the first two days’ events, offering personal insights into some of the hottest topics affecting automotive audio designers and integrators today, including: “The Automotive Industry Transformation and the Demand for High In-Car Audio Quality” presented by Dirac Research’s Mathias Johansson; and “Immersive Audio Experience in Automobiles” led by Dolby’s Andreas Ehret.
Ninety years ago Motorola’s founders introduced the first AM band car radio, and auto sound has been evolving ever since. The role of audio in the automotive industry has significantly morphed. Sound systems are being used to define the unique identities of brands, inside and out. The role of sound in cars today has expanded to translate the motion (engine noise) in electric vehicles to the creation of comfortable interior environments for the driver and passengers with fully controlled acoustics and the possibility of personal sound zones. The impact of ride-sharing and new ownership models and the possibilities of more sophisticated levels of driver assistance, evolving toward autonomous vehicles, are all having a profound effect on the way we think about sound in and around vehicles and use cases.

FM, satellite radio, stereo, immersive sound, active noise cancellation to situational awareness infotainment, Automotive Audio has changed dramatically from being standard mono sound from a loudspeaker to a true multichannel playback system, fully integrated and adjusted to the specific car. Today, some of the most advanced sound technologies are being developed and applied in Automotive Audio. The conference program will address complementary scientific fields, such as power electronics, bus systems, loudspeaker drive units, signal processing (DSP), and acoustics & vibrations (NVH).
AES 2022 International Automotive Audio Conference Partners include BdSound, Comsol, Dolby, Dirac, DSP Concepts, Fraunhofer IIS, Harman, Head Acoustics, Impulse Audio Lab, Listen, Panasonic, PCB Piezotronics, Sennheiser, and Tymphany.
Day 1 of the APEI series of presentations is led by DSP Concepts with the focus on Voice User Interface (VUI) and Machine Learning (MI).
Day 2 of the morning session will focus on modeling and measurement with COMSOL and Harman presenters and the afternoon will focus on careers in autosound.
Day 3 of the APEI session will be on Dirac’s intelligent audio processing tools.

Attendees are also invited to attend a series of five panel discussion sessions on topics including In-Car Acoustic Measurements for Frequency Response, Max SPL and Impulsive Distortion Measurements, as well as “Making Immersive Audio in Cars a Reality,” and “Noise and Sound.” Panelists will share their experiences in working with leading automotive audio powerhouses including Audi, Bose, Dolby, Ford, Fraunhofer, General Motors, Harman, Klippel, Nissan, Panasonic, and Volvo.

“Automotive Audio has developed remarkably in both complexity and performance not even dreamt of in the days of AM radios and mono dashboard speakers,” says Roger Shively, Chair of the Conference. “Understanding the science and technology applied to automotive sound systems in today’s vehicles, and to the design of advanced infotainment and communication systems of tomorrow, requires exploration of acoustics, DSP processing, test and evaluation, and the full span of additional specialties. For audio professionals engaged in the development of vehicle sound systems, the AES Automotive Audio Conference 2022 is an unparalleled and crucial opportunity to expand their knowledge and engage with leading experts.”
The Dearborn Inn, Michigan. The AES Automotive Audio Conference will offer Keynotes, Research Paper Sessions, Tutorials, Panel Discussions, AES Audio Product Education Institute (APEI) Presentations, and more. The parallel APEI Automotive Audio track will feature leading technology companies powering the next-generation systems.

SB Acoustics’ MW19TX-8 Home Audio TPCD (TeXtreme) Cone Midbass Driver
By Vance Dickason
Vance Dickason places the latest SB Acoustics’ Satori MW19TX-8 Home Audio Midbass Driver on Test Bench. Vance positions the value of TeXtreme cones, the technology's adoption in the speaker industry, and the importance of using the correct terminology based on thin-ply and spread tow principles, now explored to its full extent in Thin-Ply Carbon Diaphragms (TPCDs) available from Composite Sound. As Vance also highlights, the Satori MW19TX-8 TPCD cone 7.5" woofer is the fourth TPCD diaphragm transducer to be explicated in Test Bench, the first being an Eminence compression driver and the remaining all woofers from SB Acoustics. The high-end MW19TX-8 has a substantial feature set with similar features as the rest of Satori series with TPCD cones, impressing immediately by its distinctive cosmetics and subjective performance, which this characterization illustrates.
