Liturgy Nerds: Starting this Sunday (until Advent) we are trying a new liturgy. We're calling it Year W. It's a blend of existing liturgies and a new translation of the Bible that focuses the lectionary on stories that underscore the importance of women in the Bible (among many other important themes). Each week there will be extensive notes at the end of the bulletin for those of you who might be interested (and might be interested in talking with your kids/other loved ones about our worship).
News and Events
Make Your Pledge Today!
This past weekend we launched our annual pledge campaign - the season of generosity when we ask each household in the parish to make a commitment to support St. Columba’s in the coming year.

If you’d like to learn more about pledging, please visit:
Forum: Walt Whitman High School Leadership Academy
When: Sunday, October 9th at 10:15 am in the Great Hall

The forum will feature school leaders from Walt Whitman High School, including Principal Robert Dodd, sharing their journey to create a more equitable, inclusive, and just school environment. This story includes the development of OneWhitman, an innovative program that provides students and staff the space and time to engage in discussion about creating an anti-racist and anti-biased school culture and community. It will also include the story of the development of the Leadership Academy of Social Justice (LASJ), which includes pathways, internships, and courses oriented toward the four LASJ principles: Justice, Diversity, Identity, & Action.
Student Rally for Affordable Housing
When: Saturday, October 8th 9am-11am

Calling all Summit students with a hunger for justice! Tenleytown is an awesome place to live…for those of us who can afford the rent. Our top-notch schools, our grocery stores, our restaurants, our Metro and bus lines are out of reach for many Washingtonians—and especially many Black and Brown families. Students at local high schools want to see that change.

Jackson-Reed High School students are planning their first affordable housing rally of the new school year on Saturday, October 8th from 9 -11 am – and they’d love to welcome Summit kids to join them. GDS students also will be participating. Meet at the corner of Chesapeake and Nebraska, where students will be playing music, hearing from a few speakers, and holding up signs calling for building affordable housing in Ward 3, where we live. Later in the morning, students will offer some basic training in canvassing, followed by a short canvassing excursion in Tenleytown to ask our neighbors what they think about the need for affordable in our neighborhood. Questions? Contact Elizabeth Vaden (vadenfamily@verizon.net), St. Columba’s WIN Core Team.
Evening Labyrinth Walk
When: Tuesday, October 11th 7 - 8:30 pm in the Great Hall

Celebrate fall with a soothing, meditative walk on St. Columba's labyrinth. Parishioners and community members of all ages, faiths, and abilities are warmly welcome.
The funeral service for Rev. Louise Lusignan will be at St. Columba’s on Saturday, October 22 at 2 pm with a reception to follow.
Queries

Striving to be an antiracist church invites self-reflection, individually and collectively. In Quaker practice, Friends employ queries to engage in self-examination and remind themselves of the ideals they seek to attain. In the words of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, queries serve “as a framework within which we assess our convictions and examine, clarify, and consider prayerfully the direction of our lives and the life of the community.”

An example of a query from the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting concerning equality asks, “What steps are we taking as a Meeting to assure that our Meeting and the committees and institutions under our care reflect our respect for all and are free from practices rooted in prejudice?”

In our quest to become an antiracist church, we will be using queries during the 2022-2023 church year in our own way, posing a new query each month and offering several ways adults, youth and children to engage with it during the month (including silent reflection during worship and opportunities for discussion).

Look for the October query in the weekly newsletter the Sunday wrapper, and on the monitor in the Common—starting October 13th.
