October 2023 Newsletter

Fall at WashU

Dear Students,

As we enter into October, I trust you have all settled in with coursework and/or research. Earlier this week, we hosted our inaugural Bouchet Graduate Honor Society speaker! Dr. Christopher Cross was joined in the fireside chat by Dr. Tyriesa Howard, assistant professor in the Brown School. Both are Bouchet members and alums of Howard University. In addition to this event, Dr. Cross spent two days meeting with graduate students across both campuses.

Looking forward, I am excited to highlight a couple of events this month that I would very much encourage you to attend.

First up is the McDonnell International Scholars Academy Global Research Symposium to be held this week. We will have multiple thematic sessions highlighting the outcomes of joint projects with Academy partners. Later this month, we will host the annual She Leads Symposium with an array of outstanding speakers and panelists. And, I would also like to encourage mid-career PhD students to apply for the Pivot 314 Program, a year-long program, which provides an excellent opportunity to engage with the St. Louis entrepreneurial community. Details of each of these (and many other!) events and opportunities are available below.

As always, we welcome your suggestions for additional events and programming through The Graduate Center and l look forward to hearing from you.

Warm regards,

—Vijay K. Ramani, vice provost for graduate education and international affairs
