Despite Congress’ dysfunction, support grows for local news bills

Brier Dudley | The Seattle Times

Leadership turmoil in Congress could potentially help the local news industry in its quest for federal support, according to an update provided to publishers gathered in Chicago last week.

That’s in part because there’s growing appreciation of the industry’s dire situation and bipartisan support for federal intervention, such as tax credits to help save newsroom jobs.

“I think the reality is, unfortunately, many legislators have seen newspapers close in their districts, their districts are worse,” Dean Ridings, CEO of America’s Newspapers, said during the trade group’s Senior Leadership Conference. “The towns that have lost their newspapers are not better off and they know that.”

Join us in calling on Congress to support local news, businesses

Brian Martin | Wyoming Tribune Eagle

In Tremonton and thousands of communities just like ours, local businesses and the hometown newspaper have a symbiotic relationship. Each serves a vital role in the community, and both are better off because of the strong connection they share.

The Leader can trace its origins back to 1903, the year the community was founded as part of the westward expansion of the transcontinental railroad. From the pages of the Tremont Times to today’s print edition, e-Edition, tremontonleader.com website, smartphone apps and social media accounts, local journalists have provided the information residents need to be informed, engaged and active residents of the capital city and surrounding area.

None of it would be possible, though, without the support of our loyal customers.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution presents 'The South Got Something to Say'

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution will premiere "The South Got Something to Say" at Atlanta's Center Stage on Nov. 2. The documentary features unprecedented access to some of the biggest names in hip-hop, including interviews with Jermaine Dupri, Dallas Austin, Killer Mike, Lil Yachty, Zaytoven, Baby Tate and a gathering of all four members of Goodie Mob.

The film traces the rise of Atlanta's hip-hop scene from the 1995 Source Awards, where OutKast's André 3000 sent a message to rappers in New York and California, famously declaring, "The South got something to say." For the next 30 years, the city and its soundtrack have been intertwined.
