Beaufort County Parks & Recreation wants to improve county parks, and is asking residents for their input.
The county will hold a series of meetings, beginning this week.
MAKE SURE TO SAVE THE DATE FOR THE MEETING IN THE CITY OF BEAUFORT!
It will be held at the Charles Lind Brown Center at 6 p.m. on March 10.

The latest on
Downtown Drainage Project
Neal Pugliese, project manager for the Downtown Drainage Project, held a public meeting at City Hall on Feb. 18 to bring residents, businesses and various stakeholders up to date on where we stand.
The Downtown/Point neighborhoods, from Congress Street to Waterfront Park and from The Point to Church Street, will be the site of the City’s next major stormwater drainage project.
The City retained engineering firm Davis & Floyd to conduct a drainage study of the area, which it did by installing water gauges and sensors at various points to collect data.

Arts District seeking
sponsors for benches
The Beaufort Cultural Arts District is seeking sponsors for Phase III of its Bench Project, an artistic celebration of the Beaufort area’s history, culture and arts. The deadline is March 4.

retires from City
After an illustrious career as finance director at the City of Beaufort, Kathy Todd retires.

Council considers
initial ARPA allocation
City Council heard at its meeting Feb. 22 an amendment to the budget that would allocate $1.4 million in funds the City has received through the American Rescue Plan Act.
Before making these recommendations, City Manager Bill Prokop sought input from department heads, the public and City Council itself.

Report shows decrease
in violent crime
The Beaufort Police Department and the Beaufort/Port Royal Fire Department just released their 2021 annual reports that examine data and highlights from the year.
Violent crime decreased in Beaufort in 2021.

Burn permit cycle
begins on March 6
On Sunday, March 6, the burn permit cycle will begin. Residents will be permitted to burn during the weeks of March 6-12, April 3-9, Nov. 6-12, and Dec. 4-10. Burning is limited to between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. When granted by the City of Beaufort Fire Department, the permit is only for burning yard debris, leaves, tree branches, and yard trimmings originating on the premise of the issued burn permit.

BJWSA makes progress on 2 major projects |
|
The current phase of the galvanized pipe replacement in the City of Beaufort is starting to wrap up. This is a multi-year project to improve water quality in older areas where there are galvanized water mains. Work includes installing new PVC water mains, fire hydrants, water services, and meter boxes.
Meanwhile, work within the right-of-way for North Street continues, primarily between Linton Lane and Ribaut Road. Construction and repaving activities have resulted in the need for detours in the area. North Street is expected to be closed for most of March at its intersection with Ribaut Road.

United Way launches survey
to determine needs
United Way of the Lowcountry has launched a public survey seeking input from residents about the needs and issues they face and their vision for the future of the Lowcountry.
Residents of United Way's service area — Beaufort and Jasper counties — are invited to complete the online survey at www.uwlowcountry.org/survey. The survey takes less than 15 minutes to complete, and all answers are anonymous.

Come celebrate March’s First Friday from 5-8 p.m. on March 4 with an evening of shopping, dining, and fun. Events take place on Bay Street, Scott Street and West Street. The theme for March is “Pot O’ Gold” and each purchase enters you into a drawing. The first 10 shoppers who make a purchase from participating stores will receive parking tokens. Shoppers will need to bring the entry forms to the Old Bay Marketplace and to Scott and Bay Street locations by 8 p.m. Winners will be announced at 8:15pm.

5K Race/Walk
Women’s Wellness 5K Race/Walk begins at 8 a.m. March 5 on Bay at Newcastle Street. Participants are encouraged to dress up as a woman who has been influential in their lives. The 5k course is USATF certified -- SC18010DW. More information can be found here. |
Concert at Waterfront Park
On March 5 at 1:30 p.m., the City of Beaufort hosts the Parris Island Marine Corps Band and the 282nd Army Band for a joint concert at the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park. This is a free event for all to enjoy. Bring chairs/blankets."

Architects' Tour
Get set for HBF’s Spring Architects’ Tour -- from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 19.
Featuring the work of two of the Lowcountry’s most accomplished architecture firms— Montgomery Architecture & Planning, and Allison Ramsey Architects, the tour celebrates the best in creative and distinctive Lowcountry contemporary residential architecture.

St. Patrick's Festival
on March 19
Beaufort Town Center will host the 4th Annual St. Patrick’s Festival benefiting the Beaufort Area Hospitality Association.
The event is free and will take place on Saturday, March 19, from noon to 4 p.m.
Area restaurants and food trucks will be selling food and drinks and there will be live music by Mike Martin and The Beautiful Mess.
This family-fun event will have activities for children of all ages, and those young at heart.

and American Revolution
The Beaufort History Museum will host events on March 11-12 commemorating the Revolutionary War as it plans for the 250th anniversary of the war in 2026.
2-3 p.m. March 11: Rita Elliott will discuss the Battle of Purrysburg, S.C., and later archaeological dig discoveries made at the battle site. Elliott, an archaeologist with the Lamar Institute in Savannah, was part of a team that explored the site in 2015. Purrysburg is located near today’s Hardeeville.
10 a.m.-4 p.m. March 12: Re-enactors from the 5th Company, 4th South Carolina Regiment will conduct a live-fire demonstration with period artillery at the Beaufort History Museum, 713 Craven St. The 5th Company, 4th South Carolina Regiment was organized in October 1776 when the Georgetown, S.C., Independent Artillery was adopted into the Continental Army assigned to the Southern District.
Both events are free.
