Government Affairs Updates: Janitorial Bills

Yesterday, the Senate Appropriations Committee held AB 2374 (Haney; D-San Francisco) on suspense, effectively stopping the bill from moving forward. Additionally, AB 2364 (Rivas; D-Los Angeles) has been amended to become a study bill, significantly reducing its immediate impact. Both measures posed substantial challenges to the janitorial industry, and our industry lobbied heavily against them, emphasizing the financial and operational burdens these bills would have imposed. This outcome marks a significant victory for the commercial real estate community, safeguarding our industry from unrealistic mandates that could have compromised business operations.

A Look Back At CCRES 2024

This week, the California Commercial Real Estate Summit brought local BOMA leaders together in Sacramento to advocate, connect, and collaborate. Attendees from across the state met with nearly 60 state senators and assemblymembers, putting a face to our industry in the Capitol.

BOMA California held its board of directors meeting overlooking the Capitol on Tuesday where priority legislation and ballot measures were reviewed. This also served as an opportunity for each local association to hear from each other and collaborate on issues impacting their groups.

The revamped event began with a memorable mixer at the California museum on Tuesday. Wednesday morning's breakfast included special guest Ashley Zavala, California Capitol Correspondent at KCRA 3 News. Zavala was awarded the inaugural Media All-Star Award due to her track record of providing in-depth capitol coverage, consistently shedding light on some of the most important issues impacting our state.

The day continued with our coalition meeting with their state representatives to advocate for legislation that would benefit our industry and pushing back against harmful bills. We welcomed special guest speakers Assistant Speaker pro Tempore Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen (D-Elk Grove) and Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher (R-Chico) to provide an inside look at the legislative process.

Special thanks are due to our attendees, event partners, and sponsors for making this event a huge success!

Ballot Initiative Spotlight: Proposition 32 - OPPOSE

We continue our ballot initiative spotlight series with Proposition 32, the proposed minimum wage increase.

This measure would raise the state minimum wage from $16 to $18. California's minimum wage has rapidly increased over the last several years, and higher minimum wages have been established for fast food and health care workers. Another increase would further threaten the economic competitiveness of our state and drive businesses out of California.
