Potential Opportunity for Art Space

SAC has been made aware of a space that will soon be available for lease that we think would be a great space for creative studios.

SAC is looking for someone in the community who is interested in taking on the master lease and management of a potential art space. The space will need some build-out and need a management structure for leasing the individual spaces, but SAC is here to offer technical support in this effort if anyone is interested. The demand for art spaces is high, and we have a list of people who would be interested in these spaces. As the Council continues to support space creation, we are aware that beyond available space, a barrier will probably emerge in our community’s lack of operators. Who will step up to create and manage new spaces? If you have an interest in taking a leading role in the creation of more art space in Somerville, please fill out this interest form.

As we see more opportunities for art space, we will need to find community members who are up for the task in their own abilities to organize and lead. A majority of the studios in the city started because one person or a group of artists decided to make that happen. SAC is here to support that process through seeking opportunities and providing technical assistance, but we need the art leaders to emerge.

The Space

The space is a ground floor and street facing store front near Union Square. It has 13 subdivided rooms ranging from 65-250 square feet. Only six of the rooms have windows but nine have plumbing available for sinks making them a good fit for visual artists. These spaces might have the potential to be outfitted for music rehearsal, provided adequate soundproofing can be installed. There are large “reception” (~360sqft) and “entry” (~417 sqft) areas that could be used as a space for small events or gallery space for exhibitions.

Note: SAC does not own this space, nor do we envision leasing the space but rather we can act as facilitators to bring online more art space for the community.
