If the church and money were in a relationship, it would fall into the category of “It’s complicated.”
There is a long history of weirdness when it comes to how the church talks about money, and it has built up a pretty solid mythology around it as a result. Not the epic kind of mythology that conveys deep truth, but myths that aren’t really true, and need to be busted.
So, just like that old show “Mythbusters,” we’ll spend the next three weeks busting some money myths. The series is called “Rethink Generosity,” and it will include a focus on the practice of generosity, one of the five practices in which every church member has promised to participate.
Here are the three money myths that we’ll think about:
1) The church needs your money.
2) Giving time and talent is enough.
3) Bigger is better.
Each week, I’ll offer my thoughts about why I think each of these statements is wrong, and offer an alternative thought to replace each one of them.
Now, I know that a sermon series about MONEY is not a very good way to encourage worship attendance, but I really, really hope that you make a point to be here for these three weeks. Talking about money used to make me squirm, a bit also. It comes out of that long history of weirdness!
But it is a really important thing for the church to talk about together. And if we approach it with graciousness, humility, honesty, and love, I promise you that we’ll be okay! See y’all in church!
