We had the best time last Saturday as we teamed up with Harrington Auxiliary to present the very first Drivin' It Ho(l)me for Health and Education Car Show at Oakholm Brewing Company in Brookfield. With around 60 dazzling classic cars to inspect and admire, the show attracted an enthusiastic crowd on what turned out to be a perfect day!

Country Bank is Making a Difference by donating its former
Headquarters to the Town of Ware
|

June 1, 2022 - Country Bank, a full-service financial institution serving Central and Western Massachusetts, is pleased to announce that it is donating its former corporate headquarters building at 75-79 Main Street to the Town of Ware. Currently vacant, the building will become the new site of the Town’s police station and other multi-purpose space, if approved by the Town at a future town meeting.
Although the Bank looked at various options for the building and was approached by several developers who expressed interest in acquiring it, the Bank's Board of Trustees wanted to ensure that it was repurposed into something that would make a difference to the Town for generations to come.
"The people of Ware and Country Bank have supported one another for more than 172 years,” said Chair of the Board James Phaneuf. “We wanted to find a way for this legacy to continue and maintain the prominence of the building on Main Street.”
Country Bank has been a mainstay in the downtown area serving local businesses and residents since 1850. The building, however, has been significantly underutilized since the Bank moved its corporate headquarters, along with more than 140 team members, to 15 South Street back in 2005. At the time of its move, the Bank had outgrown both the 75-79 Main Street location and its Operations Center across the street in the former Brooks Pharmacy building.
The Bank had maintained a branch office on Main Street until the pandemic hit and closed it at that time due to staff and customer safety concerns.
“Not maintaining a presence on Main Street was a tough decision that required months of consideration while assessing how this location might be best utilized to support the community,” said Paul Scully, President and CEO of Country Bank. “The effects of the pandemic combined with a significant decrease in customer foot traffic over the years and a shift in banking habits to more customers adopting electronic delivery channels were all a considerable part of the decision. It is a massive building to be sitting empty. The decision to donate the building became evident as we weighed the usage of this location and discussed the opportunities it could provide to the Town.”
Country Bank’s West Street location is less than a mile away and has seamlessly served all customers for the past two years.
“The building, both beautiful and historical, has been well maintained and offers many possibilities for uses that will be explored,” said Keith Krukus, Former Select Board Chair. “As a lifelong resident of Ware, I can't remember when Country Bank has not been a leader in volunteering or leading the way with donating and participating in events. Over the years, Country Bank has grown, but they have always been a hometown bank at its core; it shows through its dedication and commitment to the Town with this significant donation. We know they had other opportunities but chose to make sure whatever happened to this building was a good fit for the town. This is a huge shot in the arm for the Town to help revitalize downtown and have a significant presence on Main Street. I can't thank Mr. Scully and everyone at Country Bank enough for their extreme generosity."
The property, valued at approximately 3 million dollars, includes the former banking office located on the corner of Main and Bank Street along with the E2E building located at 79 Main Street, the rear parking lot and bunker style garage, and rooftop parking situated behind the 65-71 Main Street location that was also donated by Country Bank to the Quaboag Valley Community Development Corporation back in 2016.
“The Town does not have the words to express our gratitude to Country Bank for this tremendous gift and opportunity,” said Stuart Beckley, Town Manager. “Over the past several years, we have worked hard to breathe life back into our downtown area. We couldn't be more excited about the opportunity this brings to Main Street, and to our Police Department.”
The Police Department had moved to its current location 20 years ago as a temporary fix when it left the Town Hall—and has long since outgrown this space.
"On behalf of the entire Police Department, we are incredibly excited by this considerable gesture from Country Bank, a true community partner,” said Shawn Crevier, Chief of Police. The department is looking forward to having dedicated offices, training rooms, expanded locker rooms, and space to accommodate the full-time and part-time force. It is also only steps away from our current station, which we think is great.”
Although there is no specific timeline for the transfer of ownership as it needs approval from the Town at a scheduled Town Meeting, the Bank intends to work on a smooth transition with all parties involved and expects the transfer of the location to happen in 2023.
On June 1, Country Bank introduced its enhanced brand position, Country Bank - “Made to Make a Difference,” as it reflects what the bank has always been doing—making a difference for its customers, colleagues, and communities. The tagline evolved from a series of focus groups with customers, team members, board members and non-customers who had gathered to discuss their experiences with the bank and their knowledge of the bank’s impact on the people and communities it serves. The tagline is in the process of being trademarked.

- 75-79 Main Street in Ware is the former HQ of Country Bank. Country Bank was established with the merger of Ware and Palmer Savings Banks in 1981.
- It had outgrown this location in 2005 when it moved to South Street after completely rehabbing a former shoe factory and transformed it into a state-of-the-art collaborative workspace.
- The Town of Ware would have to spend approximately $8 – 10M on a new build for the Police Station.
- To update this location to meet regulatory requirements would be approximately $2 – 3M for rehabbing the former Country Bank HQ.
- The Police Department has well outgrown the space it is in many years ago. Only steps away from its current location which is very positive for the department, Main Street and the community.
- New location and additional space will enable them to have additional services such as mental health and substance use counseling located in Ware rather than having to transport people or have them wait for someone from out of town to assist them.
- Youth and Community Center Space is being sought out currently; the former Police Station could be a possible location once they have relocated.
- Training Rooms and ample parking, along with additional office space are all a benefit to the Town and the Police Department in this Main Street location.
- Town Meeting will need to vote to approve the donation and funding in an upcoming meeting.

U.S. Department of Commerce Invests $2.6 Million in American Rescue Plan Funds for Trailway Expansion to Boost Tourism in Southbridge, Massachusetts
WASHINGTON June 7, 2022 – Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo announced that the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $2.6 million grant to Southbridge, Massachusetts, for construction of the Quinebaug Valley Rail Trail. This grant is funded by the American Rescue Plan.
This project will support outdoor recreation and boost the local tourism industry by bringing new visitors to the city, its businesses, and local attractions. This EDA grant will be matched with $1.5 million in local funds and is expected to create 45 jobs, retain 325 jobs and generate $3.3 million in private investment, according to grantee estimates.
“President Biden’s American Rescue Plan delivers federal resources to communities to ensure our nation not only recovers from the pandemic, but builds a better America for the future,” said Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo. “This project will boost tourism and outdoor recreation in Southbridge while providing economic stability for the region.”
“The travel and tourism industry is an important part of many local economies across the country,” said Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Y. Castillo. “This EDA investment in Southbridge is an excellent opportunity to leverage a regional asset and build greater economic resiliency in the region’s growing outdoor recreation and tourism industry.”
“This $2.6 million federal investment will fund the construction the Quinebaug Valley Rail Trail, bringing visitors from across Worcester County and the Commonwealth to Southbridge to enjoy nature’s beauty and support our local businesses,” said Senator Elizabeth Warren.
“With so much to discover across the Commonwealth, this project unlocks the opportunity for travelers to explore all Southbridge has to offer,” said Senator Edward J. Markey. “This multi-million dollar investment into the local tourism industry will help create hundreds of jobs and boost Southbridge’s economic resiliency.”
“Thanks to the Biden Administration’s commitment to rebuilding our economy and with funds from the American Rescue Plan, the Town of Southbridge will be able to expand the Quinebaug Valley Rail Trail,” said Congressman Richard E. Neal (MA-01). “Rail trails provide new recreation and tourism options, safe transportation alternatives, and enhance the quality of life for surrounding communities. Thanks to the Economic Development Administration’s continued support of outdoor recreation and congratulations to the Town of Southbridge.”
This project is funded under EDA’s $240 million competitive American Rescue Plan Travel, Tourism, and Outdoor Recreation program. EDA awarded $510 million in grants to all 50 states and territories in 2021. The two programs are designed to accelerate the recovery of communities that rely on the travel, tourism and outdoor recreation sectors.

National Nonprofit Petco Love Invests in Second Chance Animal Services to
Save and Improve the Lives of Pets in Massachusetts
$3,000 grant will be celebrated at local Petco event on June 14
EAST BROOKFIELD, MA (June 9, 2022) – Second Chance Animal Services is set to receive a $3,000 grant investment from national nonprofit Petco Love during a special celebration at Shrewsbury Petco at 50 Boston Turnpike on June 14, 2022, at 11 a.m. in support of their lifesaving work for animals in Massachusetts.
Petco Love is a national nonprofit leading change for pets by harnessing the power of love to make communities and pet families closer, stronger, and healthier. Since its founding in 1999, Petco Love has invested $330 million in adoption and other lifesaving efforts. And Petco Love helps find loving homes for pets in partnership with Petco and more than 4,000 organizations — like ours — across North America, with 6.5 million pets adopted and counting.
“Our investment in Second Chance is part of more than $15M in investments recently announced by Petco Love to power local organizations across the country as part of our commitment to create a future in which no pet is unnecessary euthanized,” said Susanne Kogut, president of Petco Love. “Our local investments are only part of our strategy to empower animal lovers to drive lifesaving change right alongside us. We recently celebrated the one-year launch anniversary of Petco Love Lost, a national lost and found database that uses pet facial recognition technology to simplify the search for lost pets.”

Rotary Club of Sturbridge Looking to Reconnect with Scholarship Recipients
Sturbridge, MA – When the Rotary Club of Sturbridge was first chartered on June 30, 1972 they became the fiftieth such club to be chartered in Rotary District 7910 and quickly adopted education as a primary area of focus. From the beginning, a scholarship was awarded to a local graduating high school student each year.
As funds became more readily available, the scholarships increased in amount and in the numbers awarded, according to Sturbridge Rotary President, Klaus Hachfeld. “This year, and for the last 19 years, we are proud to have awarded six students with scholarships of $1,000 each. We have also awarded several memorial scholarships honoring Sturbridge Rotarians.”
When the Sturbridge Rotary celebrates the 50th anniversary of its founding at The Publick House Historic Inn on Wednesday, June 29, the Club would like to be able to acknowledge the many scholarship recipients from across the years.
“We’d love to hear from former scholarship recipients,” says Hachfeld, “so I’m asking them to write me a brief note to let us know what role the scholarship played in meeting their educational goals. What did the scholarship mean to them and how did earning the scholarship help them on their journey? What are they doing now, and what successes have they enjoyed in life?”

She'll explain how the oils are made into the products we can buy and the different types (pure versus therapeutic grade). Children will leave with a sachet or "air freshener" that they will create. African Dance & Drum @ 1 PM – If you have a heartbeat, you can drum! For millennia, drumming has brought people together in community to create peace, health and wellness. The uplifting rhythms of Africa relieve stress and help people connect with each other, as well as their own joy. Participants will learn rhythms on the djembe and dun dun drums. Drum workshops emphasize community, self-expression and the joy of rhythm. Ages 6+ with caregiver. If it is raining on the day of this event, it will be held in the library's meeting room. However, if it is being held outside, EVERYONE is welcome to drop-in! Registration is required.

Summer Reading Program for all ages — Register to participate in the 2022 Summer Reading Program (SRP) at the Joshua Hyde Public Library. Summer Reading is for ALL AGES! You'll have the chance to win prizes and attend great events! Let's read about the great outdoors with this year's theme: "Read Beyond the Beaten Path." Off the Beaten Path: Teeny Tiny Art Show - Supplies Available for Pick-up & Submission Drop-off— While supplies last, you may pick up a packet containing a 3” x 3” canvas suitable for oil or acrylic paint along with a 3” x 3” paper board suitable for mounting other media such as watercolor, pen & ink, pencil, needlepoint or fabric. You may drop off your finished artwork any time the library is open until the end of the day on July 22.

June 17: Venture 24th Charity Golf Classic
We are so happy to be back with the best charity golf event of the year! Hope you and your team can join us for our 24th annual event. We will continue to update our details as throughout the season.
Golf with cart is $150 and contest passports are $30. Passport will gain you entry into all contests that will be held on the course and entry into our large prize raffle. Your entry fee and passport covers everything for the day.
Proceeds from the event will support people with developmental disabilities in our community and our new program for young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

The Rotary Club of Sturbridge: 50th Anniversary Celebration
The Rotary Club of Sturbridge is planning a celebration of the 50th anniversary of its founding on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at The Publick House Historic Inn.
According to Rotary President Klaus Hachfeld, the event will start with a cocktail hour at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner and dessert in Paige Hall. In addition to current Rotarians, a number of local and regional special guests are expected to attend. Tickets are $75 per person and will be available on the Rotary website at sturbridgerotary.com through June 16, 2022 for anyone from the community who wishes to join the festivities.
The Rotary Club is currently soliciting full-page, half-page, and quarter-page ads for the 50th Anniversary program booklet. If you are interested in placing a personal or business ad or congratulatory message in the booklet, please send an email to [email protected] with your contact information and a Rotarian will be in touch to provide additional information and collect your ad. If you do not have a camera-ready ad, the Club’s graphic designer will create one for you free of charge. The Rotary Club of Sturbridge is one of 50 clubs in Rotary District 7910, covering east-central Massachusetts, USA. The Club meets for dinner on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6 PM at the Publick House Historic Inn, located on Rte. 131 at the Sturbridge Common.
