City Project Wins Award

The City of Bonner Springs won a prestigious Medallion Award from the Kansas Preservation Alliance. The Bonner Springs Government Services Center (GSC) unites the city’s operational services into one complex that blends historic architecture with modern amenities. The project involves a full city block in downtown Bonner Springs and includes two buildings – one old and one new. The project team transformed the historic 1918 school building, listed on both the Register of Historic Kansas Places and the National Register of Historic Places, into the Bonner Springs City Hall and constructed a new police facility adjacent to the historic building.

The new City Hall building and the Police Department opened in 2022. We welcome you to tour the facility and see how the building was preserved for many more decades of use in our community.

Also this month, the City was notified the tax credits from the rehabilitation of 1918 building were purchased and funds were transferred back to the City from the sale. Tax credits provide a financial incentive to rehabilitate a historic building per the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation. The City collected $1.7 million in tax credits from the rehabilitation effort. The funds will be placed in the City’s General Fund to replenish the fund balance that was used to temporarily finance a portion of the project.

City Hires Fire Chief

The City would like to welcome Tim Richards as our next Fire Chief. Chief Richards served the Olathe Fire Department since 1988. Having served in nearly all ranks of the department, Tim was appointed to the position of Assistant Chief of Operations in 2001. In 2017 he was promoted to Deputy Chief of Department until retiring in September of 2019.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Management and Human Relations from Mid-America Nazarene University and an Associate’s Degree in Fire Service Administration from Kansas City Kansas Community College. Chief Richards is a National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer (EFO) graduate, and is credentialed with his Chief Fire Officer (CFO) designation through the Center for Public Safety Excellence. He is also a graduate of the Los Angeles Fire Department Leadership Academy.
