FMLink Weekly News Digest I April 18, 2023
The first annual Voice of the Customer Benchmarking Survey by global service-based systems integrator Convergint revealed that the role of physical security professionals has grown increasingly complex, now requiring intensive information technology (IT) skills in areas like cybersecurity and cloud computing. The survey found that 72% of physical security professionals anticipate that their roles within their organizations will change in the next one to two years — with an increased emphasis on emerging technology, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, mobile credentialing and autonomous solutions.

The elevated status of physical security is also evident. Indeed, 35% of survey respondents noted that they report directly to the CEO or other C-level executives, demonstrating how physical and electronic security and risk management are now of organizational and strategic importance.

In Part 1, Data for all! In one place and always current. A Facility Condition Assessment will reveal everything, of Eileen McMorrow’s interview with Josh Lowe, co-founder and chief solutions officer, AkitaBox, he explained how traditionally, Facility Condition Assessments (FCA) of buildings were performed by A/E firms every five to seven years. That’s no longer acceptable. Contemporaneous data on buildings is in demand as property owners want to know how their real estate is performing or serving the needs of the business.

In Part 2, below, Lowe details how new software enables the availability of up to the minute data to be accessible to the facility and building management team and all the technicians who service building equipment.

How does the living FCA benefit the broader lifecycle of facility data?
Rob Lowe: FCA is about checking in and getting validation. We all know what industry standard really means for the lifecycle of a product. You know you may get more time, but maybe an FCA demonstrates that the item is close to end of life. Industry remaining life or estimated or observed remaining life that shows you can get X more years is useful data. You then make a decision that impacts the FCA and spending decisions.

The landscape of corporate sustainability is set to accelerate this year. In late 2022, the United Nations released guidelines to help organizations align on Net Zero carbon emissions goals and avoid “greenwashing,” deceptive or exaggerated claims about an organization’s products, services or operations. There is growing pressure from governments and consumers alike for organizations to go green. With energy use in buildings responsible for 40% of global carbon emissions, facilities are a strong starting point for widespread corporate change.

The 2023 State of Corporate Sustainability Report, from Smart Energy Decisions and enterprise software provider Atrius, surveyed over 300 industry professionals across different sectors to find out where organizations are on their sustainability journeys, and what progress needs to be made. The responses indicated an important theme for facilities management this year and after: energy management is the first step of a longer and broader corporate sustainability journey.

This National Electrical Safety Code 2017 Handbook was specifically designed to be used as a companion piece to the code itself and will give you concise summaries on those hard-to-understand standards in the 2017 NEC. Also included for your learning enhancement are diagrams, photos, and even practical examples to make sure you don’t miss a single piece of information in the code.

Enteligent Inc., developer of solar power optimization and electric vehicle (EV) solar charging technologies that are designed to deliver more of the clean solar energy you generate and dramatically reduce cost, recently unveiled what the company calls the “world’s first” DC-to-DC solar hybrid bidirectional EV charger.

Beyond providing a sustainable and high-demand amenity for tenants and employees, the installation of Enteligent’s solar EV chargers will help energy users shift their charging habits, says the company. A paper published in March 2022 by a team at Stanford University’s Precourt Institute for Energy examines the stress that increased EV ownership will place on the grid as owners charge at night. Providing users an option to charge directly from the sun through a charger that does not need to be supported by the electric grid ensures grid and price stability.

Occupational and environmental health and safety (OEHS) group AIHA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM), entering a three-year agreement to enhance and promote the roles of professionals in fields represented by both organizations: that is, occupational and environmental health and safety, and hazardous materials management.

The MOU inaugurates a partnership that aims to advance the professionalism and practice of hazardous materials management, workplace health and safety, and industrial hygiene.
