WHO WE ARE
Turley Wine Cellars was founded in Napa Valley by former emergency room physician Larry Turley in 1993. Under the direction of winemaker Tegan Passalacqua, Turley now makes 50 different wines from over 50 vineyards across California, primarily Zinfandel and Petite Syrah, with many vines dating back to the late 1800s. By farming organically and focusing on old vine vineyards of these varieties, Turley aims to both create and preserve California’s unique winemaking culture.

The 2021 Zinfandel Cedarman is a blend of Dragon and Rattlesnake, with a touch of Petite Sirah. It is once again one of my favorite wines in this vast range. Dark and sumptuous, with great density, the 2021 dazzles right out of the gate. Black cherry, gravel and dried flowers are some of the many notes that inform this deep, flavorful Howell Mountain Zinfandel. The price? Ridiculous for this level of quality and pedigree.

According to the Turley website, "Dragon Vineyard is an estate-farmed, certified organic vineyard. Planted at 2250 feet at one of the highest points on Howell Mountain, the vineyard sits well above the fog line and faces east, first to receive the soft morning sun. These important features, along with the rocky, red volcanic soil, make for a unique, full-bodied, powerful Zinfandel."

Grapes for this wine are sourced from the certified organic vineyard, owned by Dick Fredericks, which was planted in 1937. Though technically within the Sonoma Valley appellation, the vineyard is actually located about 900 feet up along very steep contoured terraces. Turley feels lucky to work with this vineyard, as it is very rare to find hillside head-trained old vines. The wines are high in acid, bright, balanced, with well-integrated fruit & tannin.

2021 Vintage- The 2021 Zinfandel Kirschenmann Vineyard is superb. In most vintages, the Kirschenmann can be a bit light, but in 2021 it offers a beguiling mix of its typical floral qualities, but with an extra kick of depth that holds everything together so well. Bright red berry fruit, rose petal, chalk, min and white pepper are some of the many notes that grace this striking Lodi Zinfandel from Turley.

Maibock is the perfect Spring beer: full-bodied but not heavy; malt-forward but not sweet; dry with a hint of zesty hop flair but not very bitter. Maibock is a wonderful transitional beer ushering us out of the dark, heavy beers of winter and toward the lighter, brighter beers of summer. Brewed during the last few cold weeks of winter, Maibocks are left to lager (cold condition) until Spring - with a traditional release during late April, early May. Mai is German for May!
Deep gold to amber in color, Maibock is a fairly strong lager with a typical ABV range of low 6% to 8%. While still full-bodied and malt-forward, Maibock is generally leaner and drier in body with a more pronounced hop note than other Bock styles.
Munich's legendary Hofbrau is credited with the first commercial Maibock dating back to the early 1600's; however, the Maibock of the modern brewing era was likely developed in the early 1800's. Major advancements in malting technology in the 1800's allowed for greater precision over temperature control and thus color development in the drying and kilning of malted barley. It's this technological advancement that made pale-colored malted barley possible and widely accessible, giving rise to lighter-colored beer styles like Pilsner, Pale Ales, and Maibock!
