Hummingbirds on the North Westside | |
|
Four common types of Hummingbirds in the Okanagan: |
- Anna’s
- Black-chinned
- Calliope
- Rufous
| |
Are you committed to Hummingbirds?
Feeders are a great food source for these beautiful travelers and can attract large amounts of hummingbirds. The key to a successful and healthy feeder is to clean it regularly. A dirty feeder can carry harmful bacteria and fungi that will kill many birds. If you choose to feed this summer please be sure to take in your feeders starting in September unless you continue to feed all year. Hummingbirds will stay around if they can rely on your feeder as a food source. If you do choose to feed in the winter you may have to bring in your feeder at night to prevent freezing.
|
How to clean the feeder:
- Deep clean once a week with one part white vinegar to four parts water.
- Change the solution every couple days.
- Do not use bleach, soaps, or cleaning chemicals.
To make nectar:
- Boil water for two minutes
- Mix one part white sugar to four parts water
- Allow mixture to cool before filling feeder
- NEVER use honey, sweeteners, molasses, brown or raw sugar
- Do NOT add red food colouring or other products

General tips - remove attractants
Garbage and recycling
- Wait until the morning of collection day to put your bins at the curb, do not put them out the night before
- Keep your containers in a secure location (such as a garage or shed)
- If you do not have a garage, you can secure your containers to a structure so they can't be dragged away
- Freeze smelly items until garbage pickup day
- Rinse out all recycling material to eliminate food residue and odours
- Wash your carts periodically with a bleach solution
Yard
- Collect ripe fruit from trees and off the ground
- Feed pets indoors and keep all food bowls inside
- Clean your BBQ grill after each use
- It's best to not use bird feeders during bear season (March to December)
- Maintain an odourless compost pile by using lime (made from ground limestone), turning often, cutting food into small bits, layering greens with browns and never add meat, fish, fats, oils or grains. Always cover food with lawn clippings and browns
Overall, never approach or interact with bears.
