Adopt A Pet Today from the Lassen County Animal Shelter – Ozzy
Ozzy. Sweet, spunky, and affectionate.

This gorgeous girl came to the shelter as a stray and has since warmed right up to shelter staff. She knows some basic commands, such as ‘sit’ and ‘shake’, and she is always SO excited to go out in the play yard to spend time in the fresh air. Shelter staff still needs to evaluate Ozzy with other dogs and with cats, but so far she has been wonderful. She doesn’t mind the resident shelter cats and always wants to play with other dogs through the fences.
She has the best smile and the most stunning golden eyes and she’s ready to show them both off to potential adopters. Ozzy is about 5 years old, spayed, and microchipped. If interested in meeting Ozzy, please contact Lassen County Animal Shelter staff at (530) 257-9200. More photos and videos of Ozzy and other adoptable animals at the shelter are viewable on petfinder.com.

Shelter will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day
Featured animals at the Lassen County Animal Shelter are available for adoption on a first-come-first-serve basis. According to California law, all adoptable dogs and cats must be spayed and neutered before leaving our facility. If interested in adopting an animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Police Department Targets Bicycle Safety with Enforcement Operation
The Susanville Police Department conducted a traffic safety enforcement operation targeting bicycle safety on May 26th, issuing nine traffic citations.

The department focused on the most dangerous driver behaviors such as speeding, making illegal turns, failure to yield to bicyclists or pedestrians, and stop sign/red light running.

The Susanville Police Department suggests the following safety tips for bicyclists and drivers:
Drivers
  • Slow down and follow the speed limit. Be careful traveling through intersections.
  • Look carefully for bicyclists and pedestrians before making a turn or opening a car door near streets or bike paths.
  • Be patient when traveling behind a bicyclist. Maintain at minimum three feet of space when passing or overtaking a bicyclist.
  • Never drive distracted or impaired.

Bicyclists
  • Use lights at night (at minimum, a front white light and rear red reflector).
  • Although not required for riders 18 and older, always wear a properly secured helmet. Helmets significantly reduce the chance of a head injury in the event of a crash.
  • Bicyclists must travel in the same direction of traffic and have the same requirements as any slow-moving vehicle.
  • Yield to pedestrians, just as a driver would. Pedestrians have the right-of-way within marked crosswalks or within unmarked crosswalks at intersections.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Fraud Order is Removed and Patents to Timber Lands Given
No Criminal Proceedings Will Result from the Lassen County Cases
May 30, 1906

Three hundred and sixty patents issued by the general land office at Washington have been received here. The patients are for timber claims taken by individuals during the past three years, under what is known as the timber and stone act, and are situated in Modoc, Lassen and Plumas counties.

Three years ago when the rush for timber lands was on and a great number of filings were being made, State Mineralogist Aubury sent one Horace Stevens through the country to make an investigation a to the character and legality of the claims.

Stevens spent two or three days here looking through the records of the land office and as a result of his search made a voluminous report, denouncing the whole thing as a fraud and declaring that there were only five legitimate entries in the whole land district.

This brought on an investigation by the interior department, through Special Agent J. N. High, who put every entryman through an examination of a series of cross questioning that could not have been outdone by a whole police department.

High’s investigation tied up 300 or more entries for over a year, but the demands of the entrymen to the commissioner of the general land office for some recognition of their rights brought on the disposal of the special agent and now patents have been issued for the land.
