Martin County High School Junior Named Florida's Doodle for Google Winner
Sophie Araque-Liu, a junior at Martin County High School, has been named Florida's winner in the 14th annual Doodle for Google competition. Her submission, pictured above, was inspired by the prompt "I care for myself by...".

"I care for myself by accepting [that] others care for me," Sophie wrote as part of her submission packet. "Often I struggle to shoulder a burden on my own and forget that I have so many people, like my mom, who care about me and want to help. Opening up and letting others support me not only relieves my stress, [but] it [also] lets me tackle things I could never do on my own."
A talented Martin County High School (MCHS) student could soon have their art featured on the Google homepage for hundreds of millions to see. Google is announcing the 54 State and Territory winners in its 14th annual Doodle for Google competition, a contest where K-12 students across the United States have the opportunity to create their own version of the Google logo inspired by the prompt "I care for myself by...".

Sophie Araque-Liu, a junior at MCHS, is one of the 54 U.S. State and Territory winners, with her Doodle having been selected as Florida's winner. Google's guest judges - Selena Gomez (recording artist, actress, entrepreneur and philanthropist), Elyse Fox (director, model and mental health activist) and Juliana Urtubey (2021 National Teacher of the Year) - were instrumental in selecting Sophie's Doodle out of the thousands of entries received this year.

To help their favorites succeed, everyone across the USA is encouraged to vote for their favorite Doodle from the 54 State and Territory Winners. Public voting will determine the five national finalists (one in each grade group). Google will announce these five national finalists in June, one of which will have their Doodle featured on the Google homepage for a day.

The national winner will take home a $30,000 college scholarship and their school will receive a $50,000 tech package for the establishment or improvement of a computer lab or technology program.

Voting will open in the near future - please monitor our website and social media channels to find out how you can support Sophie and Martin County High School!
District Prioritizes Entrepreneurship and Small Business Certifications, Positioning Students to Become Workforce Leaders
Earlier this month, Governor Ron DeSantis announced that more than 7,500 Florida students earned an entrepreneurship and small business (ESB) certification this school year.  The Entrepreneurship and Small Business certification validates individuals' understanding of core business principles, including the essentials needed to launch and maintain a successful business. Supporting access to ESB certifications is part of Florida's goal to be the best state in the nation for workforce education by 2030.

In alignment with this statewide focus on workforce education and development, the Martin County School District prioritized entrepreneurship as part of its career and technical education (CTE) course offerings this school year.  Using funds awarded as part of the Florida Department of Education's Entrepreneurship Education & Training Grant, the District has accomplished the following:

  • 107 student ESB certifications earned at Jensen Beach High School
  • 128  student ESB certifications earned at Martin County High School
  • 41 student ESB certifications earned at South Fork High School
  • 8 CTE staff ESB certifications earned

Students enrolled in the District's CTE programs are not only prepared with practical and technical skills relevant to their chosen career pathway(s) but now also with the entrepreneurial mindset and skills to successfully develop and manage a business. The District plans to equip additional teachers with the foundational principles of entrepreneurship to help even more students become prepared to earn their ESB certification.

Elementary Students Encouraged to Participate in Summer Reading Challenge
Families are encouraged to keep their children engaged in books and excited about reading over summer break by participating in the Martin County School District's Summer Reading Challenge!

Accelerated Reader is the District's independent practice platform, which allows us to:

  • Make essential reading practice more effective and engaging for every student.

  • Tailor reading practice to each student’s current level.

  • Manage all reading activities.

  • Cultivate a lifelong love of reading and learning in our students.

Here are a few tips families may use to encourage children to read at home and share in their experiences:

  • Set aside time each day for your child to read.

  • Find a special, quiet space where your child can get comfortable for reading.

  • Take turns reading to your child and allowing your child to read to you.

  • Spend time with your child talking about the books they are reading.

  • Help your child set reading goals and celebrate what they have accomplished.

To acknowledge students' accomplishments, the District will recognize students who earn 10 or more points in Accelerated Reader during the month of June. Rewards will be issued by individual schools.  Students may participate in this contest by signing in to ClassLink with their District credentials and clicking the "MCSD Reads" icon.

We wish all of our families a safe, relaxing summer break full of wonderful reading experiences!

Celebrating Patriotism
Each year, the Martin County School District partners with the Martin County Supervisor of Elections Office and Lesser, Lesser, Landry, & Smith, PLLC to encourage students to create artwork that promotes voting awareness.

Color Me Patriotic aims to involve our future voters in the elections process while allowing them to showcase their “patriotic pride” on canvas.

All Martin County high school students are eligible to participate in the contest. Students are given a theme related to voting awareness and then tasked with developing artwork that reflects their ideas.

Contest winners receive a monetary award, certificate of appreciation and a trophy through a sponsorship made possible by Gary Lesser of Lesser, Lesser, Landry, & Smith, PLLC.

Internship fields include graphic design, technical support and audio booth operation. Through their participation in the program, students get a taste of what it's like to be a member of the workforce, including having a supervisor, work schedule and job duties.

Martin County High School Senior Named Recipient of National Merit Scholarship
Joseph Semrai, a member of Martin County High School's Class of 2022, has been named a recipient of the prestigious National Merit Scholarship. The National Merit Scholarship Program is a renowned academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955.

This year’s competition began in October 2020 when high school juniors took the PSAT/NMSQT, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Last fall, the highest-scoring participants in each state, representing less than one percent of our nation’s high school seniors, were named Semifinalists on a state-representational basis. From this group, some 15,000 students met the very high academic standards and other requirements to advance to the Finalist level of competition. Approximately 7,500 Finalists from across the nation earned the “Merit Scholar” title and accompanying scholarships this school year.

Congratulations, Joseph!
School Board Issues Request Community Feedback Via Millage Referendum Renewal Survey
In August 2018, Martin County voters generously approved a half-mill property tax referendum in support of operational needs throughout the Martin County School District. While the half-mill property tax referendum is set to expire this year, the proposed renewal of the referendum will appear on voters' ballots in August 2022.

It's important to remember that if the renewal is approved by voters in August, the referendum will simply continue. There would be no increase in property taxes for home or business owners.

The Martin County School Board is seeking recommendations from the community regarding initiatives that could be funded by the renewed millage if it is approved by voters. Those wishing to learn more or provide input are encouraged to complete this survey.
