Two big events on October 1 (Community Day) and October 3 (4th Golf Outing) sadly were canceled due to extreme weather brought on by Hurricaine Ian. Hurricane Ian was a large and destructive Category 4 Atlantic hurricane, that was the deadliest hurricane to strike the state of Florida since the 1935 Labor Day hurricane. Ian caused widespread damage across western Cuba and the southeast United States, especially the states of Florida and South Carolina and damaging rain and wind traveled up the east coast through our region.
On October 1 the Homecoming soccer and volleyball games did go on. Although the girls volleyball game was forfeited, visiting team players from the MKSD Colts joined the RSD Wildcats for great practice games against the PSD Panthers. The boys soccer games were also able to be held outdoors on the field.
Many thanks to all of the Community Day exhibitors, vendors, volunteers and supporters for your commitment to participate. We hope to reschedule Community Day in the Spring of 2023, so stay tuned.
As well, the 4th Golf Outing on October 3 had to be canceled as it was determined that morning the grounds were not playable. Some golfers did arrive and enjoyed a nice lunch and social afternoon.
Many thanks to the sponsors and supporters of the 4th Annual Golf Outing as well. Your support enables us to continue our tradition of excellence in Deaf education for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Golf participants will receive the event give-aways including the golf polo shirt and we will surely contact you all for the 5th Golf Outing next Fall.

Carl Way Unity Day
Monday, October 3, 2022
On Monday, October 3rd, PSD celebrated Carl Way Unity Day to remember and honor our beloved colleague, friend, and family member, Carl Way.
Students and staff who had the privilege of working with Carl know he made everyone feel included and respected, and that he embraced people from all walks of life. The PSD community shared stories, sang, danced and smiled remembering Carl. Each year PSD celebrate the day by embrassing unity within the PSD community. We thank you Carl Way!!

On October 6 we had our Back to School Night on campus and in-person! It was wonderful to see over 30 families in person again for the event, learning more about our curriculum, our staff, our programs, and what we are teaching their child.
We can't wait to host Back to School Night for Preschool Programs on October 20.

In honor of Latino & Hispanic Heritage Month, we are celebrating the history, culture, influence, achievements, and contributions of Latino and Hispanic communities at PSD and throughout the world.
On Monday, October 17th, two special Hispanic/Latino/x guests, Lisa Montalvo and Danilo Torres, wrapped up the month by meeting with our students and staff. They read children’s stories about Hispanic traditions, gave presentations, and played traditional Hispanic games. Thank you, Lisa and Danilo!

Saturday, October 15 PSD exhibited at the Sims Fall Community Festival hosted by the Ed Snider Foundation and in partnership with Read By4th and the Philadelphia Department of Parks & Recreation. The event featured a book give-away, ASL interpreted story time, take-away arts and craft activities, resource organization information exhibitors, refreshments and, or course ice skating lessons! Big fun was had by all! | |

Sunday, October 16 we were at the HLAA Walk4Hearing event at the Philadelphia Navy Yard as an alliance sponsor. Vistitors to our table received mini ASL alphabet lessons and ASL related giveaways. We greeted families and children, and shared information about the school. Remember 40% of funds raised come back to PSD to support family engagement program for our students. Join the PSD Community

The PSD Volunteer Program is ready to welcome new and re-connect with previous volunteers! Join or re-join our team to support the programs and activities of the school. Volunteer opportunities include support in classrooms (pre school through high school), in student service departments (speech, physical therapy, etc.), the library, Family Resource Center, special projects, community events, and more. Applications, PA State clearances and proof of COVID vaccination are required. Flexible schedules. American Sign Language (ASL) skills a plus!

COMMUNITY EVENTS

We’re excited to announce that Signs of Communication, LLC and the American Society for Deaf Children are partnering to create a social-emotional learning video series.
This is a series of video episodes (each approximately 10-15min) that shows how families learn to solve their problems and achieve their goals. The episodes focus on four different families who have deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) children and communicate with American Sign Language (ASL) and English. During each episode, the kids “break the 4th wall” in order to include the audience, breaking down more complicated vocabulary and asking questions about their viewer’s life.
We are seeking volunteer actors to be involved in this project! You must be local to the Washington, D.C. area or willing to travel to the Washington, D.C. area. Volunteers will receive a gift card & special surprise for their time. We hope to film in December, either on a weekend or during winter vacation. The exact dates will be determined when we have selected actors.
Although the roles indicate gender, we are open to changing these to fit the right actors, including LGBT families, so feel free to pick any character you are interested in auditioning! Have an idea for a character that’s not listed? Feel free to contact us at info@signsofcommuncation.org

In-person sessions, focused on sharing your experiences, hosted by the Pennsylvania Statewide Independent Living Council, in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Office for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing.
Your stories & experiences will help us gain a better understanding of the communities we serve and use your stories in our future planning and advocacy!

We are excited to announce the release of the brand new edition of our guide, Smart Homes Made Simple: Your Guide to Smart Home Technology, 2nd Edition. This guide was written to help people with disabilities, older adults, and their families learn to successfully integrate smart home technology into their homes and their lives.
“Smart home technology is one of the best resources for people with disabilities so they can live safely and more independently in a home of their own. These devices also help people perform everyday activities, thrive in employment, school, and in their communities," says PATF’s CEO, Ben Laudermilch.

This module is designed to provide participants with resources to increase their awareness of the ethnic and cultural diversity within the deaf community; and that there is not “one” deaf community but rather many. This module examines identity and intersectionality among deaf people from lived experiences of deaf people. This is designed for anyone who wants to engage with deaf people. It provides participants with fundamental knowledge of identity and intersectionality as well as some tools to engage with deaf people.
