New Book, Peace by Design, by CIHF Academic Director Mardelle Shepley

We live in an era in which designers will make an essential and critical contribution to the health and success of humanity. Design can promote healing in healthcare environments, contribute to good mental health, reduce gun violence, and positively impact health and racial equity, all of which contribute to providing a more peaceful world.

The primary focus of this book is to inspire young designers, academics, and practitioners to achieve their maximum societal contribution.

This book includes chapters by CIHF Industry Scholars Erin Peavy and Troy Savage and CIHF Academic Scholar Marie Elf.

What's New in Research?

A landmark-based augmented reality (AR) wayfinding system for enhancing older Adults’ spatial learning

Co-authored by CIHF Faculty Fellow, Saleh Kalantari, Associate Professor in the Department of Human Centered Design

Navigating complex indoor environments can be difficult for older adults due to natural declines in spatial and navigational abilities. To address this, researchers developed NavMarkAR, an augmented reality (AR) system using smart glasses to provide landmark-based guidance. This project fills a gap in design research by exploring the cognitive effects of AR navigation systems. After an initial usability test with six participants, the researchers refined the prototype and conducted a larger study with 32 participants navigating a university building. Results showed faster task completion and improved cognitive maps with NavMarkAR. Future research will explore long-term cognitive benefits.

Exploring mobility patterns and social assets: informing housing decisions for Canadian older adults

Co-authored by CIHF Academic Scholar, Marie Elf, Associate Professor at Dalarna University at the Department of Nursing and at Chalmers University of Technology at the Department of Architecture

Researchers studied how mobility patterns and social health can improve housing decisions for older adults in Canada. Twenty participants (mean age 80.4) from Quebec and Alberta tracked their movements using GPS and daily journals over 14 days, documenting destinations, activities, and transportation methods. Interviews revealed physical assets like libraries and supermarkets, and social assets such as family support and neighborhood connections. Most travel was by car or on foot, with winter weather limiting outdoor activity. Findings suggest that mobility patterns should be considered in housing decisions for older adults.

Mean Affect Moderates the Association between Affect Variability and Mental Health

Co-authored by CIHF Faculty Fellow, Anthony Ong, Professor in the Department of Psychology

This study explored how affect variability relates to mental health outcomes and how mean affect levels influence these associations. Using data from the Midlife in the United States Study and National Study of Daily Experiences, 1,676 participants self-reported their affect over 8 days. Cross-sectionally, greater positive affect variability was linked to higher depression, panic disorder, mental health professional visits, and poorer self-rated mental health, while greater negative affect variability predicted higher panic disorder risk. Longitudinally, elevated positive and negative affect variability predicted higher depression risk and worse self-rated mental health over time. Mean affect levels moderated these associations, with stronger variability-health links when positive affect was high and negative affect was low. These findings suggest affect variability impacts both short- and long-term mental health.
