Did You Know?
Illinois Urban Manual
The Illinois Urban Manual is referenced in the Illinois EPA – National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System ILR10 permit, for individual construction projects (>1 Acre) and is used as a standard for evaluating compliance for construction engineering plans and site inspection results.
The reference material is a dynamic document that relies on the contributing efforts of technical experts in the industry as well as governmental organizations collaborating to approve any suggested revisions to the document.

KDSWCD Team Continuing Education:
Hydric Soils Training
KDSWCD Resource Conservationist Patrick McPartlan and Resource Analyst Becky Monreal joined Illinois Soil Classifiers Association instructors earlier this spring to learn more about Hydric Soils! Everyone got dirty as they dug in to how hydric soils form and why they are important.

Hydric soil forms under conditions of saturation long enough during the growing season to develop anaerobic conditions. They support the growth of plants that have adapted to grow in saturated and low-oxygen conditions. Scientists study these wet soils to better understand wetland ecosystems and provide guidance for conservation and restoration.
The team applies these principals and more with every land use project they assist with in Kane and DuPage counties.
Welcome, Kat!
She's from up North, but now she is a Kane County resident! Kat Gerdts joined the KDSWCD team as Administrative Coordinator in April. With a variety of management experience, most recently at a land trust, Kat is excited to "build things" with the District.

A passionate advocate of sustainability, Kat wants to be sure she makes a positive impact on the planet - her two sons live here after all! At home, Kat is busy tending to a mid-century modern home with a newly installed native plant garden, while her German shepherd / black lab "helps" by digging holes.
