Mark Your Calendar! Breakfast Runs July 22 and August 12

A Breakfast Run is a Midnight Run ... but in the morning. It's a time for volunteers to distribute food, clothing, blankets and personal care items to the homeless poor on the streets of New York City.

South is planning Breakfast Runs on Saturday, July 22, and Saturday, August 12. We are scheduled to be in the city and start serving breakfast at 9:00 AM, exact location to be announced. We should be back in Dobbs by noon.

We will need a number of volunteers to make this happen: people to contribute food, prep food, folks to come to the city to serve breakfast & offer hospitality, plus donations of NEW men’s briefs (L), NEW white athletic socks (L), and used & clean t-shirts, any colors, (L, XL) as well as tooth paste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap and wash clothes.

More to come! If you have questions, please contact Maureen Fox at

mbuckleyfox@gmail.com or 1-516-662-2263.

Faith, Justice & the Arts

Our belief that we can make this world a better, kinder, more just, more whole and more connected place has inspired several programs at South. We thought an introduction might be helpful as you look for ways to be involved, or for a program that meets your needs.

Community Nursery School

Community Nursery School is the longest running of South Church's programs. Founded in 1945, at a time when high quality childcare outside the home was virtually nonexistent and totally inaccessible to lower income families, CNS began with an impulse towards feminism and economic justice and continues to a be a warm and loving place for preschool children to play, learn, participate, share and grow.

How you can be involved:

Parents of preschoolers: tour for the fall or consider CNS Summer Session. It runs June 26 - July 28 and is open to all 3s and 4s (not attending K in the fall).  Contact Director Linda Jo Platt at cnsdobbsferry@aol.com

Dobbs Ferry Food Pantry

On any Wednesday morning in front of South Church, clients of the Dobbs Ferry Food Pantry step into a world that we’ve created together—volunteers helping clients, folks dropping off donations, and people in need of food looking out for each other.

The Pantry first welcomed clients in 2011. South sponsors the Pantry and provides the space for storage and distribution.

How you can be involved:

Volunteers raise money, write blogs, write grants and spread the word so that our neighbors know that we are here to help. "You can work as little or as much as you want—we’d love to hear from you so shoot us an email at dobbsferrypantry@gmail.com."

The Donald Gallery

The well-traveled space between South Church’s sanctuary and Fellowship Hall serves as a popular Rivertowns gallery representing local artists. The Donald Gallery is named for its founders, longtime South Church members and artists Robert and Elizabeth Donald. The Gallery mounts six shows a year and has featured local painters, photographers, sculptors, and even a fiber artist.

How you can become involved:

The Gallery needs volunteers to help out with PR/social media and hanging shows.

Anyone interested in getting involved, please contact Curator Donna Thompson at healinginteriors@gmail.com

Roots & Wings

Roots and Wings looks for ways to support sustainability--from growing food to composting, connection and community. Volunteers grow food for themselves and the Food Pantry in the Kitchen Garden, behind South, and care for the labyrinth of pollinator-friendly native plants in front of church. Roots & Wings also runs a summer CSA and has offered guided foraging walks, making Shiitake mushroom logs, and cooking, preserving and sourdough bread-making classes. And more.

How you can be involved:

We garden together on Fridays at 3:30 and Saturdays, 10 to noon.

Join us to learn or to teach. Have an interest or idea? Let's discover, together. info@rivertownscommunitygardens.com

Faith & Justice Learning Lab / Leadership Lab

Our program for children and teens explores the link between faith and justice, art and self. Grades 1 – 5 is the Faith and Justice Learning Lab. In the middle and high school years, our focus turns to leadership. Those years are the Faith and Justice Leadership Lab.

How you can be involved:

Enjoy the Workshop Production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” this Saturday! The Learning Lab is looking to connect with families with children ages 5 -12! Contact Learninglab@southpres.org
