New Resource Guide Now Available!

Jo Colbert Stanley, MCIArb, Stanley Legal Services, and Bryan J. Branon, Regional Relationship Manager for the Americas, have co-authored a Resource Guide for the Selection of Diverse Arbitrators and Mediators under the guidance of Felicia Boyd, FCIArb, and Deborah Hylton, FCIArb, who chair the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution Women In Dispute Resolution Committee (WIDR). The Resource Guide for the Selection of Diverse Arbitrators and Mediators is offered as a risk management tool for in-house counsel and those who select arbitrators and mediators and provides diversity and inclusion data and statistics, D&I market accountability measures, strategies to manage a D&I risk portfolio and resources to access diverse arbitrators and mediators. The Resource Guide is a collaboration among the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators North America Branch, Federal Bar Association ADR Section, the National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms and The Institute for Inclusion in the Legal Profession.

The NAB Chapter Chairs will be participating in a Zoom meeting on May 12 with NAB Chair, Katherine Smith Dedrick FCIArb, and other NAB officers. Periodic meetings of the Chapter Chairs and officers have been established with the aim of improving the NAB membership experience.
NAB members are prominently represented on the faculty of the ABA DR Section’s Arbitration Training program taking place on June 1-3 in Chicago. The members teaching at that event include: Gary Benton C.Arb, FCIArb; James R. Ferguson FCIArb; Tom Hanrahan FCIArb; Sandra Jeskie FCIArb (NAB Immediate Past Chair); Terry Moritz FCIArb (Chicago Chapter Chair); Merriann Panarella FCIArb; Barbara A. Reeves FCIArb; Sarah E. Reynolds FCIArb; Harrie Samaras FCIArb (DR Section President); Harout J. Samra FCIArb; and Dana Welch FCIArb.
Professor Charles T. Kotuby Jr. FCIArb asks for support of the new Ukrainian Legal Assistance Project that he helped found at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. The program aims to provide full scholarship and living assistance to young Ukrainian Lawyers and law students to join the LLM program in Pittsburgh where they will work on pro bono legal issues pertaining to the war in Ukraine and earn an LLM degree focused on human rights and international dispute resolution in the process. Details can be found here. The program welcomes many forms of assistance and support, both volunteer and monetary.

Congratulations to Jim Reiman FCIArb and member of the NAB Board who has a book out this year entitled Negotiation Simplified. Available at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and various independent book sellers. Jim is also part of the Oxford Programme on Negotiation at the University of Oxford, Saïd Business School.

On April 21, 2022, the newly-formed Pennsylvania and Ohio Chapter of the CIArb presented a panel discussion on “Third Party Discovery in Arbitration” at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. The panels included practitioners and academics from Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Philadelphia, and a keynote address from Eric Tuchmann of the AAA. To ensure the newsletter goes out the first business day of each month, it is requested that information for the June 2022 newsletter be submitted by May 16, 2022.
When participating in a program or event of another organization, please remember to include in event flyers and publications, if possible, your post-nominal designations such as FCIArb. In addition to showcasing credentials you have earned, doing so helps all members by raising recognition of CIArb and, by association with you, helping to demonstrate that CIArb members are highly qualified individuals who have been credentialed by what in our opinion is the world’s leading ADR credentialing organization.

If you have friends who ought to join, let them know about it. There are currently over 280 members, mostly NAB members. Feel free to post matters for interest and to comment on posts by others.
