Patient Spotlight: Indiana

At the beginning of April, 4.5 year old Indiana went to his primary DVM with right pelvic limb lameness and skipping. After radiographs were performed, he was diagnosed with bilateral Grade II-III Medial Patellar Luxations (MPL's). On 4/4/23, the DVM proceeded with stabilization surgery on Indiana’s right leg. Indiana came for his initial evaluation at BARC Rolling Hills on 4/18/23, non-weight bearing on that leg.

The goal at the start of rehab for his owner, was for Indiana to strengthen and regain full use of his right pelvic limb, so he could return to playing with his sister. Because it was post-surgical rehab, the focus was also on making sure he healed fully and correctly to mitigate the loss of muscle or shifting of surgically implanted pins.

Indiana began twice weekly acupuncture and therapy sessions that initially focused on pain management, weight bearing on his right leg, increasing range of motion with gentle stretching, proprioceptive exercises and Laser therapy. Indiana’s sessions then progressed to more active therapeutic exercises such as cavaletti poles, cone weaves, sit to stands, figure eights, and ramp walking to work on his strength and gait training. After one month, Indiana was weight bearing on his right leg.

Indiana’s owners continue to work on his therapy at home with his custom home exercise program and report that he is happily playing with his sister again.
Service Spotlight: Solensia

Manufactured by Zoetis© Animal Health, Solensia™ is the tradename for a drug called Frunevetmab and the only FDA-Approved Treatment to control Osteoarthritis (OA) pain in cats.

Frunevetmab is a cat-specific monoclonal antibody designed to recognize and attach to a protein called nerve growth factor (NGF) that is involved in the regulation of pain, preventing the pain signal from reaching the brain. Because it’s a targeted treatment, Solensia is less likely to cause gastrointestinal side effects and renal disease often seen with NSAIDs or corticosteroids that are traditionally used to manage the chronic pain due to OA.

Available by prescription only from a licensed veterinarian, Solensia is a monthly injection that is administered subcutaneously (under the skin) and is dosed based on the weight of the animal. Because it is given as a monthly injection, it is a convenient and easy way to manage your cat's pain, without having to deal with daily medications.

While OA in cats isn’t curable, Solensia can help manage the pain associated with the condition to improve your cat’s quality of life. Contact BARC in Torrance at 310-542-272 or Rolling Hills Estates at 310-265-0065 if you think your cat’s pain may benefit from Solensia.

What do you like to do when not at work? Reading, playing basketball, spending time with family
Favorite color? Green
Favorite food? Ramen
What got you interested in working in rehab? During my undergraduate studies, I was deciding between Physical Therapy and Veterinarian professions. Ultimately, I chose Physical Therapy to help humans, however I found out about animal rehabilitation when my family dog had back surgery. Animal rehabilitation was the perfect mix of the 2 fields I was passionate about and I knew I wanted to be a part of it.
What is a fun fact about yourself? My senior year of high school, I was the #1 free throw shooter in the nation.
Have you been on any fun or unusual vacation spots? I took a 2 week trip to Europe (London, Paris, Venice, Rome, Barcelona) with my physical therapy school friends after graduation. My favorite city we visited was Barcelona because of the food and culture!

Grieving A Pet

Losing a pet can be a deeply painful experience. Our pets are often much more than just animals; they are companions, friends, and family members, and their loss can trigger a grief process similar to the one we experience when we lose a human loved one. The grief can be intense and may encompass a range of emotions, including denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. This is known as the five stages of grief, originally conceptualized by psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. It's important to remember that everyone grieves differently and there is no "right" way to grieve. It's also normal to experience these stages in different orders or to cycle back through stages you thought you had already passed.
