June 5 Commemoration:
Celebrating 75 Years of the Marshall Plan
|
|
“The truth of the matter is that Europe’s requirements for the next three or four years of foreign food and other essential products – principally from America – are so much greater than her present ability to pay that she must have substantial additional help or face economic, social and political deterioration of a very grave character.”
With these words, spoken on June 5, 1947, at Harvard University, Secretary of State George C. Marshall made the case for massive American investment in the devastated economies of post-World War II Europe. The call he issued that day was to shake off the American instinct to isolate after engaging in an international conflict and to stay engaged in the world at a scale that was unprecedented in American history.

Join us on June 5, 2022 as we reflect on those pivotal days in 1947 and 1948 (when President Truman signed the plan into law), to share with a new generation of Americans the enduring lessons of Marshall’s leadership during crucial moments in our history. We will gather on the grounds of Dodona Manor to celebrate 75 years of freedom and democracy and recognize the visionary leader who played a key role at a crucial moment
Historians and others will be on hand to reflect on the seminal moment when George Marshall’s singular skills as an ethical leader contributed to a successful plan and generated the broad public and political support it needed to pass Congressional muster. The Marshall Center is dedicated to the proposition that our nation and our world can still benefit from his example.
Refreshments will be provided. Free parking is available at the Loudoun County Government Garage on Loudoun Street.

Going Pro:
Ethical Leadership Program Expanding
to Include Young Professionals
|
|
The Marshall Center’s ethical leadership training program has added a new offering: sessions for small groups of early-career, professional leaders.
Leveraging the leadership pillars used in the Five-Star Character program for high school students, the new seminar series gathers groups of professionals together to discuss ethical leadership and how participants might apply it in their work lives today and into the future.
“This is a natural evolution for our leadership program,” reflects Pete Janhunen, who directs the Marshall Center program. “Selfless service, unwavering integrity and visionary leadership can deliver tremendous value to organizations that embrace them, and we are excited to work with companies and organizations that share our commitment.”
The sessions begin with a tour of the house and introduction to the life and times of George Marshall, followed by a discussion of the three pillars and small group work to put them into immediate action. Participants commit to checking in over the following months to see how ethical leadership holds up under the stresses of the real world.
Companies or organizations interested in learning more about the Marshall Center’s professional training program can email us at elc@georgecmarshall.org.

Visitors learned about historically significant people who resided in Leesburg, discovered hiding places dating back to the Civil War and delighted in exploring the secret private gardens of some of Loudoun’s beautiful homes. After the home tours, many of the guests made their way to Dodona Manor to learn about George C. Marshall as the capstone of their visit.

Marshall and the European Recovery Program
Discussion with Rachel Yarnell Thompson
Join us on Thursday, May 19, 2022 to hear Rachel Thompson deliver a presentation on Marshall and the European Recovery Program. This presentation features the role of George C. Marshall in the development of the European Recovery Program (1949-1952), better known as the Marshall Plan, that led to the recovery of economic, social, and democratic institutions in Europe at the end of World War II. Called the most successful United States government program in history, it laid the groundwork for the integration of Western Europe and is considered the forerunner of the European Union. With more than 70 archival photographs, Mrs. Thompson acquaints the listener with the unique features of this visionary plan, its implementation, and in what ways Marshall, as Secretary of State, shaped its key concepts, and secured its passage through the United States Congress.
Marshall historian Rachel Yarnell Thompson, a former high school American history teacher and curriculum specialist, has for 22 years been a student of George C. Marshall at his museum home here in Leesburg, Virginia where he and his wife lived from 1941 until his death in 1959. Her extensive knowledge of Marshall’s life in this small Northern Virginia town has given Thompson a unique understanding of a remarkable leader whose personality was sometimes hidden by his outwardly austere and inscrutable personality.
