Soap, shaving razors, antiperspirant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, and female hygiene products are now available at the pantry. If you need more than the Eaglet Pantry has available, the larger Gulf Park Pantry may have what you need. Librarian Tracie D. Hall on 2023 TIME 100 List

Tracie D. Hall, the first African American woman to lead the American Library Association since its inception in 1876, has spent much of her professional life serving the public good.

As a librarian, she has sought to have the greatest possible diversity of books for the greatest possible public readership. She has served in and fought for public libraries—what Andrew Carnegie called the “palaces for the people.”

With the resurgence of censorship and the rise of politicized redacting of history and curricula, Hall and librarians across the country have had to battle valiantly for a reader’s right to read, learn, and grow. Practicing her belief that “free people read freely,” Hall has led efforts against censorship that demonstrate her brave stewardship of the bulwark of democracy, our public library. Hall has labored to protect the democratic ideals of freedom of thought, assembly, press, public education, dissent, speech, and above all the freedom to imagine a liberated world through the word.

Hall’s life’s work teaches each of us that the love of libraries and books can free us from hatred and lies not just for the present generation but for the liberation of all to come. https://time.com/collection/100-most-influential-people-2023/6269831/tracie-d-hall/

MEGSA Holds Beach Clean Up

Kudos to MEGSA for partnering with Thalassas (a small business started by two COA graduates, Kelsey Kuykendall and Chris Fleming) for a wildly successful Earth Day beach cleanup and post-clean-up social gathering. Nearly 40 participants from GCRL, COA, and DMS worked together to remove over 55 pounds of trash from Front Beach! This inaugural beach cleanup is planned to be an annual event. If you would like an event tee shirt, contact James Klein. The proceeds from the sale of the shirts support MEGSA student travel awards.

Alligator Visits Caylor Building

A wandering alligator decided to visit the east front door of the Caylor Building on Thursday, May 11. While alligators are common residents of our local bayous, this is the first time in at least 30 years anyone recalls one taking up residence in a building doorway. A wildlife agent from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries captured it for relocation. Our University Police stationed an officer to ensure that no one accidently encountered the alligator. Our best guess estimate is it was about 6.5 ft long from tip of nose to tail.

New Employee at GCRL

J. Gary “Gar” Pickering

MEC Communications Specialist

Joshua Gary “Gar” Pickering is a Mississippi Gulf Coast native who is happy to return home after more than a decade away. Gar left the area following the Deep-Water Horizon oil disaster. During that time, he held an assortment of positions including tour guide and site interpreter, a creative manager for a media company, marketing, and communications officer at an art museum, and prior to coming to the MEC, he was Communications Director for a statewide fraternal organization in Louisiana, where he also managed the library and archives.

Gar is excited at the opportunity to work in Marine Science, especially in an area so dear to him. In addition to moving his family to the Ocean Springs area this summer, he will be graduating from Louisiana State University at Alexandria with a Bachelor of General Studies, with a Humanities concentration and double minors in Religion and Fine Art.
