Help Support our Programs including Marydale Retirement Village | |
Success Spotlight:
Marydale Retirement Village
Paulette* had become isolated at Marydale Retirement Village because her extended family were unable to offer their support. This resident called Marydale her home for over twenty years, and was known for caring for other residents by helping them with everyday tasks. Unfortunately, she recently experienced significant memory issues, which allowed unscrupulous persons to take advantage of her financially.
Paulette received financial assistance from Marydale staff, allowing her to restore her financial solvency. She was also provided medical support for her memory issues. With help and support, Paulette's quality of life has improved, enabling her to continue offering support to others in the community.

Catholic Charities USA Leaders Visit Diocese of Wilmington
To See Programs, including Marydale Retirement Village
| |
This month, a national group of leaders from Catholic Charities USA visited colleagues in Wilmington, Delaware, taking time to tour the headquarters and several sites where services are performed by the Catholic social services agency.
CC USA administrators Jane Stenson, food and nutrition, Curtis Johnson, housing strategy, and Ben Wortham, integrated health, joined local leaders Ruth White, Executive Director of the Diocese of Wilmington Catholic Charities, and her colleagues Lisa Schieffert and Stephanie Kelton in meetings.
The planned trip to Delaware was for a Healthy Housing Conference hosted by Delaware State University. Their visit included touring Bayard House and Marydale Retirement Village (MRV) facilities, both operated by Catholic Charities in Wilmington.
The group stayed for lunch and later joined residents in the MRV Community Center, including sitting in on a knitting and crocheting group who gather to make hats and scarves, which they then donate to the Salvation Army and to Friendship House. Their donations have topped over 1,000 pieces donated for charity, according Esther Lovlie, MRV Administrator.
MRV is a Section 8 Housing program operated by Catholic Ministry to the Elderly and serves 112 residents in 108 units, that include senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

Supreme Court Makes a Decision on Grants Pass
By Ruth Anne White, Executive Director, Catholic Charities
| |
Recently, I assumed the role of Executive Director of Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Wilmington. I am a resident of Maryland and have followed the news coverage about homeless shelters because there are so few on the Delmarva Peninsula and the Eastern Shore in particular.
I have been a member of the Governor's Task Force on Homeless Youth for about 15 years and in that capacity, I have seen that the sense of urgency with which Gov. Moore and his appointees have in ending homelessness is palpable. The Supreme Court made a decision on the City of Grants Pass v. Johnson et al case. Among other things, this July 2024 decision allows cities to empty encampments. Some advocates characterize this as "criminalizing homelessness." I believe that is an oversimplification of the facts. If one reads the amici submitted to the court, it becomes clear that the argument that government entities made to the court were sophisticated and illustrate that absent sufficient shelter capacity, cities need the authority to levy fines and incarcerate homeless people in order to restore order and avoid public health emergencies.
As a matter of fact, a homeless encampment that included 90 people (some of whom were children) was just dismantled in Georgetown, Delaware. This part of rural Delaware is just a little over an hour from the shelter we are preparing to open in Princess Anne, Maryland. When one considers the evolution of the law regarding homelessness, it is absolutely imperative that shelters are adequately funded and can remain open. It would be a tragedy if one of the potential residents of the shelter were incarcerated due to lack of adequate housing.

Special Donation Drive Project a Success
In Partnership with Catholic Charities,
Goodwill of Delaware and St. Vincent de Paul Society
| |
A special donation project in partnership with St. Vincent de Paul, Catholic Charities and Goodwill of Delaware was held Sept. 13-15 at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Hockessin, Delaware.

Volunteers assisted with loading the Catholic Charities truck with needed donations, including clothing, shoes, kitchen and household items, medical equipment, computer equipment, small appliances, and books.
Partnering with Goodwill to accept donations that would have come to our
former thrift shops is in alignment with the missions of both organizations.
— Ruth Anne White, Executive Director, Catholic Charities
As part of the parish collaborations, the Wilmington Diocese hosts donation drives in partnership with Goodwill. Donated items are sold in Goodwill stores across Delaware, generating revenue for Goodwill’s nonprofit mission. Goodwill provides compensation to Catholic Charities for the donations collected, helping Catholic Charities to continue its mission services in the communities it serves. Outside of donation drives, donors wishing to give items to Catholic Charities are directed to a local Goodwill location.
