The Oak Creek Plan Addresses These Major Impairments in the Watershed

The Oak Creek Watershed Restoration Plan is complete! Crafted by the dedicated individuals of the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC), the Oak Creek Watershed Restoration Plan is a regional water quality management tool designed to address the nine key elements for watershed plans identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The elements specify requirements that include identifying the sources of pollutants, describing watershed management measures and a timeline for implementation, estimating costs, setting milestones and criteria for plan progress, and providing information and education.

The preparation of this publication was financed in part through planning funds provided by Milwaukee County Parks, City of South Milwaukee, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, and Fund for Lake Michigan. Planning spanned 6 years, beginning in April of 2016 and ending in February 2022.

"The Oak Creek Plan provides specific, targeted recommendations to address four major focus areas: water quality, recreational use and access, habitat conditions, and flooding. In addition, the Mill Pond and dam located on Milwaukee County parkland within the City of South Milwaukee was evaluated using the plan focus areas."

The Oak Creek Plan also addresses the Mill Pond Dam area with six different options for its future.

The Oak Creek Plan was unanimously adopted by the municipality of South Milwaukee. It has also been adopted by Greenfield with both Franklin and Milwaukee County currently in the process. The Plan will continue to be presented by SEWRPC for adoption by additional municipalities within the Oak Creek Watershed. Root-Pike WIN is assisting SEWRPC and local leaders with this process, as well as working with municipalities and landowners to advance the goals and recommendations of the completed Plan.

The Oak Creek Plan is now in the hands of the EPA and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for final approval. We are confident this plan will improve water quality within the Oak Creek watershed.
