National Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15 – October 15, 2024

During Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor the remarkable contributions of trailblazing pioneers who have significantly shaped the future of medicine and science. Carlos Juan Finley, MD, a visionary in public health, eradicated the yellow fever epidemic through his groundbreaking work on mosquito transmission, saving countless lives and transforming global health policies. José Celso Barbosa, MD, broke new ground as the first Puerto Rican to earn a medical degree in the U.S., paving the way for future generations of Hispanic medical professionals. Meanwhile, Severo Ochoa, MD, made monumental strides with his discovery of an enzyme crucial for synthesizing ribonucleic acid, unraveling essential aspects of the human genetic code and furthering our understanding of molecular biology. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at Mercer University School of Medicine, we proudly recognize these and other trailblazers whose innovations continue to inspire and shape the future of medicine and science.

Inspired by the successful establishment of a student food pantry at Mercer’s law school, School of Medicine faculty and students have created a similar resource for the MUSM community. Thanks to a grant from the Georgia Health Family Alliance Community Health program, a well-stocked food pantry was launched over the summer in Macon, Columbus and Savannah, with plans to expand to Valdosta. Second year medical students Abbie Earnest and TJ Weehunt have incorporated the food pantry into their DISC project. By ensuring reliable access to food, the project helps reduce stress and supports students in staying focused on their academic goals. Plus, "The Bear Cub-Board" seeks to prevent the loss of valuable study time and to educate the campus community on food insecurity and nutritional health. The pantries are located in the medical libraries in Macon and Savannah, and outside the faculty suite in Columbus. If you’re interested in getting involved with a pantry on your campus, please reach out to Kim Meeks at meeks_k@mercer.edu.

September is Suicide Awareness Month

This month invites us all to come together, raise awareness, and show compassion to those who might be struggling. Unfortunately, many people who struggle with suicidal thoughts don’t seek help because they’re afraid of being judged or misunderstood. This stigma can prevent individuals from reaching out and getting the support they need. The American Psychological Association highlights that the more we discuss mental health openly, the less stigma there is. By sharing stories and encouraging conversations, we help create a supportive environment where people feel safe to seek help. Learn more about Embracing Hope During Suicide Awareness Month
