International Women's Day
International Women's Day, also known as IWD for short, grew out of the labor movement to become an annual event recognized by the United Nations.

The seeds were planted in 1908, when 15,000 women marched through New York demanding shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote. A year later, the Socialist Party of America declared the first National Woman's Day.

It was Clara Zetkin, a communist activist and advocate for women's rights, who suggested the creation of an international day. She put her idea to an International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen in 1910 - and the 100 women there, from 17 countries, agreed to it unanimously.

International Women's Day was first celebrated in 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. The centenary was celebrated in 2011.

Things were made official in 1975 when the United Nations started celebrating the day. The first theme adopted (in 1996) was "Celebrating the Past, Planning for the Future".

International Women's Day has become a date to celebrate how far women have come in society, politics and in economics, while the political roots of the day mean strikes and protests are organized to raise awareness of continued inequality.
Valentini Party Highlights!
Jean Henderson did it again!

Jean and her husband hosted the Valentini Party in their lovely home on Valentine’s Day this year, and, it was another stellar success!

Upon arriving, guests were served tasty Valentinis, followed by a beautiful presentation of appetizers and desserts. It was a wonderful evening shared with friends.

As always, Jean is a most gracious hostess. Thank you, Jean!

The party was overflowing with goodies at every turn. And the views were lovely!

Jean Henderson was the perfect hostess, as always. Spending time in her beautiful home in the company of our wonderful WIP ladies is always a pleasure.

It was so wonderful to have so many of us together again in one space. Here's to many more WIP gatherings in the coming months! We can't wait to see you at the next one!
Gullah Tour Recap
Our WIP Black History Month event - the Gullah Tour - was extremely interesting to all who attended.

The narrator and guide was a Gullah descendant who grew up on Hilton Head Island. He spoke with the perspective of first-person experience as we drove through each Gullah neighborhood, telling us about the person each area was named for, as well as a bit about their family occupations and history.

He explained points of interest at each location, showing us where the magistrate office was located and the town attorney in the strip of what was their original downtown business district. It was interesting to hear about the grocery store that was called the 'Robbery,' and to learn that the island was inhabited only as far as Jarvis Creek - by the Gullah cemetery on Hwy 278 where Whole Foods is today.

Beyond that point were huge alligators, wild boar, giant snakes and all sorts of scary wild animals. During those times and into the 1960s the Gullah population was 95% of the Island's inhabitants. Today, they are only 5% of the populous.

This tour provided the rich Gullah history of our wonderful Island!
