A MESSAGE FROM The Rev. Tina Rathbone
The photograph above is from this past Saturday. It was taken just after the second snow storm of the week and – for me at least – the wintry scene makes it hard to believe that we are, in fact, inching our way into Spring.

So much of life is like this, I find. One thing seems indisputably real on the surface, even as another reality all together is shaping itself into being just underneath it, out of sight. It’s the same with faith, I think. Watching the news these days, we see only war and death – and the sight causes us to despair. But the opposite of war and death are present too, often as invisible as the shoots of new life under the snow.

Time and time again, Jesus insists that love, hope, dignity, and beauty remain, even in the heart of the horror. And if this is true, the question becomes: how can we get under the surface to increase and uphold them even a bit? There are as many answers to this question as there are people – but one thing is sure: if we are to become able to help at all, we need to remain open to seeing and hearing and feeling as much of the bitter reality on the surface as we can bear. We need, like Jesus, to keep both our hearts and our hands open.
Community in Faith
Wednesday evening Lenten series
are offered in collaboration with Hevreh,
St. Paul’s Church, Christ Trinity Church,
and Grace Church.
The Rev. Erik Karas and Rabbi Neil Hirsch will lead the book exploration of The Bible With and Without Jesus: How Jews and Christians Read the Same Stories Differently by Dr. Amy-Jill Levine

Join us on Zoom, Wednesdays,
through April 6th at 7:00pm

We will examine why Jews and Christians read many of the same Biblical texts – including passages from the Pentateuch, the Prophets, and the Psalms – differently. Exploring and explaining these diverse perspectives reveals more clearly Scripture’s beauty and power. It is not necessary to purchase the book.

Community in Faith
is taking a week off from its regular Zoom gathering and is going on a field trip on March 16th at 6:00 PM to celebrate Purim with the folks at Hevreh of South Berkshire at 270 State Road in Great Barrington.

Purim is one of the most fun holidays celebrated by the Jewish people, but is often under recognized. The event begins at 6:00pm.

Purim (held on the 14th day of the Hebrew month of Adar) commemorates the day Esther, Queen of Persia, saved the Jewish people from execution by Haman, the advisor to the Persian king. Esther bravely exposed her previously hidden Jewish heritage to her husband the king and asked him to save her people, which he did.

Costume-wearing is encouraged and there will be festive decorations and noisemakers. A little bit of Mardi Gras, Easter, and Halloween all rolled into one, these are some of the traditions that make the holiday so fun. Proof of vaccination and masks are necessary. (Jean Chapin)
GIDEON'S GARDEN
I pray for refugees in all the conflict zones we read about and see images of, that they be treated with dignity, humanity and care in all circumstances. I hold these prayers while I set seed into soil, while I send emails to summer camps and young programs.
"[Gardening is] like faith, and it frees you to live life more authentically. Your garden is a protest for all the ways in which we deny our life by denying other lives."
From A New Garden Ethic by Benjamin Vogt.

Samuel Barber, the American composer (1910-1981)
wrote a cycle of ten songs for voice and piano in 1953 called The Hermit Songs, which take as its basis a collection of anonymous poems written by Irish monks from the 8th to the 13th centuries. In this season of Lent, we read about Jesus’ retreat into the wilderness. We are also reading about the origins of monasticism, the desire for some of the faithful to retreat from the busy world to spend their time contemplating God. In response to this aspect of Christianity, we listened to the tenth song, “The Desire for Hermitage.” We settled on the line in the middle as the place to start our theological reflection, “that will be an end to evil when I am alone.” The songs were premiered by Leontyne Price (in the picture) with the composer at the piano. Here is a recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAsBNUjiI5
and the lyrics are:

Ah! To be all alone in a little cell with nobody near me;
beloved that pilgrimage before the last pilgrimage to Death.
Singing the passing hours to cloudy Heaven;
feeding upon dry bread and water from the cold spring.
That will be an end to evil when I am alone
in a lovely little corner among tombs
Far from the houses of the great.
Ah! To be all alone in a little cell, to be alone, all alone:
Alone I came into the world,
Alone I shall go from it

COLLECT
Dear God of peace and serenity
You banish evil from our hearts
We thank you for letting us dwell in your love and knowledge
We pray that we may find the solitude to hear and be refreshed by you
So that renewed, we may return to the world.
AMEN

Third Sunday in Lent
Luke 13:1-9

At that very time there were some present who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. He asked them, "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them--do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did."

Then he told this parable: "A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, 'See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?' He replied, 'Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.'"

VESTRY NOTES

On Sunday, February 27 we had the first meeting of the new 2022 Vestry. Even our new junior warden, Pennie Curry, was able to join via Zoom. We also welcomed two new vestry members, Laura Jordahl and Andrea White. New to this year is a feature of the meeting Tina has introduced. Each month two members of the vestry will describe their Spiritual Autobiography. In this way we will learn from one another how God in Jesus has shown up in our lives and brought us to this point at Grace and in the vestry. In the business section of the meeting, we continue to monitor the technology used on Sundays, the budget, and hear about all the many, many things our rector, Tina, is involved in. Laura has volunteered to be the liaison from the Vestry to the Community Engagement Team and John will serve as liaison to the Worship Committee. We thank them for this! Our next regular vestry meeting is on March 27 at noon and is always open to members of the parish. Additionally, the vestry will meet with Canon Rich Simpson on March 20 for a Mutual Ministry Review.

Our New Prayer Basket

We welcome you to use our new prayer basket.
On Sundays you will find a basket near the welcome table, with slips of paper available for you to write down prayer requests. You can ask for prayers for those who are ill, or in need of healing or encouragement of any kind, prayers for intentions, journeys, or projects, the birth or adoption of children, and prayers of thanksgiving for anything that needs celebrating. In other words, please ask for any prayers that are important to you and those you love. You may identify yourself and those for whom prayers are needed, but names are not necessary or required. These requests will be prayed for by our healing ministers both during the service and during the week for a period of one month. Keep an eye out for the basket!!

WHAT ARE YOU
GRATEFUL FOR?
In this time of fear and anxiety, it can be easy to miss the daily blessings that are right in front of us. Being grateful is not just for good times. Being grateful is even more important when fear sets a place at your table and heartbreak seems to be in your every breath. Because by being grateful we become aware of all the ways God is working in us. Being grateful is a part of our healing and our deliverance. Being grateful is where our best selves reside.
SHINE YOUR LIGHT
