THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER EASTER

John 5:1-9

"Do You Want to Get Well?"

do you want to be well.jpg

From the Pastor

As followers of Jesus Christ, our hearts go out to all who have been affected by the mass killing in Buffalo, NY this past weekend. The 18-year-old terrorist who committed the crime drove a long distance to the grocery store in Buffalo, where he sought to kill as many black people as possible. The killer believed in "replacement theory."  The "great replacement" is a conspiracy theory that states that nonwhite individuals are being brought into the United States and other Western countries to "replace" white voters to achieve a political agenda. It is popular among white supremacists, and various versions of it are promoted on a number of news shows and websites.

The Buffalo Police Department has released its official list of victims in Saturday's shooting at Tops Friendly Markets. The department said on Sunday that the victims' identities were confirmed and all families and loved ones have been notified.

The 10 people who were killed:

Roberta A. Drury of Buffalo, N.Y. – age 32

Margus D. Morrison of Buffalo, N.Y. – age 52

Andre Mackneil of Auburn, N.Y. – age 53

Aaron Salter of Lockport, N.Y. – age 55

Geraldine Talley of Buffalo, N.Y. – age 62

Celestine Chaney of Buffalo, N.Y. – age 65

Heyward Patterson of Buffalo, N.Y. – age 67

Katherine Massey of Buffalo, N.Y. – age 72

Pearl Young of Buffalo, N.Y. – age 77

Ruth Whitfield of Buffalo, N.Y. – age 86

Three people suffered injuries that have been deemed non-life threatening. Two of them are no longer in the hospital:

Zaire Goodman of Buffalo, N.Y. – age 20 (treated and released from ECMC)

Jennifer Warrington of Tonawanda, N.Y. – age 50 (treated and released from ECMC)

Christopher Braden of Lackawanna, N.Y. – age 55

Our beautiful, diverse nation continues to have a serious race problem. These murders were committed by one very sick individual. He was racially prejudiced and hateful. But the conspiracy theory he embraced has been embraced by millions of Americans, which creates a dangerous environment for black and brown people, immigrants, Jews, and all socially marginalized people.

I believe that until our great nation has an honest reckoning about our past, warts and all, we will continue to leave many of our fellow citizens in a terribly vulnerable and disadvantaged situation.

"Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."

Peace in Christ,

Pastor Mitch

Rabbi Neil Blumofe Comes to RRCC This Sunday, May 22

Rabbi Neil Blumofe is Senior Rabbi at Agudas Achim Congregation in Austin. With gratitude we welcome him to speak to our congregation this Sunday

Join us in the sanctuary at 9:30 a.m. for a special talk and extended Q and A session by Rabbi Blumhofe on modern Judaism, Jewish-Christian relations, and the troubling issue of antisemitism in today's world. It will be live at the church as well as available on zoom (see the Friday "Reminders" email for the zoom link).

Rabbi Blumhofe is a husband and father of three. He graduated from the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Academy for Jewish Religion – California (Rabbinical School). He is involved in the Clergy Leadership Incubator (Mentor); the Shalom Hartman Institute – Jerusalem (Senior Fellow); Rabbis Without Borders (Fellow); and the Institute for Jewish Spirituality (Hevraya). He is on the Executive Board for Leadership Austin and the Board of Directors of Texas Impact and Texas Freedom Network. He regularly convenes conversations and evenings of jazz — exploring identity, heritage, and meaning — connecting Judaism, spirituality, and African-American traditions all within the storied history of the United States.

Many thanks to Julian Grant, our Commissioned Minister for Interfaith Studies, for arranging for Rabbi Blumofe's visit.  You will not want to miss this excellent interfaith learning opportunity.  If you can't come in person and would like to participate through zoom, here is the link:

Pentecost Sunday - June 5

Father's Day - June 19

Welcome, Elwyn and Barbara Graham

Elwyn and Barbara Graham came forward during worship on Sunday to join the membership of Round Rock Christian Church. They are uniting with RRCC by transfer of membership from Hillside Fellowship Church in Spring Branch, TX.

The Grahams began worshiping with us in January of this year, and have also begun to enjoy being a part of the Explorers Sunday School class as they work through the book of 1 Corinthians. Barbara is a retired high school history teacher, and Elwyn worked with mainframe computers. We feel so blessed that God has brought them to Round Rock Christian Church, and we look forward to serving Christ together with them in the days ahead.

June 3 - Kameron Kienzle

phlippians passage _2_.jpg

Dear Round Rock Christian Church Family,

The church is one body with many members called from every nation. In Christ we are a new creation. Distinctions of race, culture and nationality, and differences between high and low, rich and poor, male and female, must not be divisive among us. We are all equal in Christ, who by one Spirit has bonded us into one fellowship with him and with one another.

We are very thankful to God for you. We are also blessed, for we came to be so much loved by you. That is the right Christlike love we have ever received very graciously through your prayers.

Thank you, and God bless you,

Solomon and Meaza Habtemariam

Elders Prayer/Closing Message

My most favorite meditation booklet is Jesus Calling by Sarah Young. I would like to share this verse with you today.

Jesus Calling: May 17

As you sit quietly in My Presence, remember that I am a God of abundance. I will never run out of resources. My capacity to bless you is unlimited. You live in a world of supply and demand, where necessary things are often scarce. Even if you personally have enough, you see poverty in the world around you. It is impossible for you to comprehend the lavishness of My provisions: the fullness of My glorious riches.

Through spending time in My Presence, you gain glimpses of My overflowing vastness. These glimpses are tiny foretastes of what you will experience eternally in heaven. Even now you have access to as much of Me as you have faith to receive.

Rejoice in My abundance--living by faith, not by sight.

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Phillipians 4:19, ESV

Prayer:

Lord, help me to not be trained always by what I see, but I want to be trained by the promise that You have given me. Thank You for taking care of me. Thank You for giving me daily access to Your abundant riches. Help me to center myself on You and this promise.
