Beyond the Net: Start 'em early!

"What, this is a kitchen violation?"

We all know pickleball is a great family sport but who knew an 8½ month old could join in the fun?? This cutie pie came with mom, grandparents and out-of-town friends this week, a welcome visitor at a quiet time in the Center.
If you're looking for a way to play pickleball with kids, try "triples" with the youngster playing in front of two adults. If s/he hits the ball, great! If s/he doesn't, the point continues and everyone has fun.
See you on the courts!

The Expansion Project:
What's in it for tennis players?
|
|
Much of our communications about the outdoor expansion project has focused on the indoor pickleball building because that's the most obvious addition to the campus. However, that focus has led to many tennis players telling us that they see no reason to support the project because "it's all for pickleball."
In fact, somewhere between $1.5-2.0 million of the nearly $6 million cost of Phase 1 will be spent on tennis-related improvements!
|
|
We realize that we have not made the case clearly enough to our loyal tennis players about how you'll benefit from the expansion project ... and therefore, why we continue to ask for your support.
Here are the benefits in a nutshell:
-
You get brand new outdoor tennis courts – Phase 1 demolishes pretty much the entire outdoor campus and you'll end up with four brand new tennis courts and two resurfaced ones (the current pickleball courts). We all know that Courts 9-12 (those closest to Pine Grove Road) have been failing for years and the clay courts require an unconscionable amount of water besides being difficult to maintain, so these changes will improve your playing experience as well as make us "greener." (See the 5/8/22 eNewsletter to read about the many ways in which the expansion plan will make us greener.)
-
You'll get the Tennis Center back – After construction of the indoor Pickleball Center in Phase 2, the current Tennis Center will be dedicated to tennis. In other words, no "pop, pop, pop" of pickleballs, no cheerful but loud chatter from crowded pickleball courts, and (don't laugh) fewer players using the bathrooms.
-
We all get more parking – 28 more spaces! 'Nuff said.
But these tennis-related improvements come at a cost and we need your help. As we prepare to start Phase 1, the contractor's final quote has come in almost 20% higher than our planned $5 million budget, with one-third of that increase due just to replacing the clay courts.
Tennis players, we appeal to you now to make a Phase 1 donation to help fund tennis-related costs. As a thank-you, new Phase 1 donors and pledgers of $3,333.33 or more will receive a really nice 30 oz. double-walled insulated water bottle as well as federal and Colorado Enterprise Zone tax advantages.
Please help! $3,333.33 comes out to only $3/day if you choose to pay over 3 years with monthly, quarterly or annual recurring charges. It takes a village and we hope you'll play your part in restoring the outdoor tennis courts back to something we can all look forward to playing on. Thank you!

Pickleball is America’s fastest growing sport, seeing over a 39% increase in the last 2 years. Now there are almost 5 million people with a paddle in hand across the country. It continues to gain popularity based on its quick learning curve, no matter age, gender, or skill level. With the increased number of people now playing pickleball that also means the potential for more injuries. There are an estimated 19,000 injuries annually with over 90% from those over 50 years of age.
Although injuries can happen from trips and falls, sprains or strains, they can also happen from overuse. More common pickleball injuries include ankle sprains, muscle strains in the hamstrings, quadriceps, or shoulder, overuse injuries to the foot, heel, or elbow.
We cannot 100% prevent an injury from happening, but we can certainly reduce the risk of having injuries. There are few key points to help avoid injuries from happening.
- Warm Up: Arrive 15-20 minutes and get a good warm up prior to playing. Increase your heart rate while doing exercises that will mimic the game, such as skipping, lunges, grapevine, lateral steps, and mini body squats.
- Hydrate Properly: Remember we are at altitude and the sun can heat up quickly; in general aim to drink six glasses of water daily, more if you regularly exercise.
- Apparel: Be sure to have supportive shoes and protection for your eyes. Wearing shoes that fit properly and have good tread will offer support and lower the risk for potential injuries.
If you do experience an injury or a problem that’s “Not getting better” you should seek medical attention to get proper treatment to start on a plan for your recovery.
The Steamboat Orthopaedic and Spine Institute (SOSI) is enthusiastic to partner with the Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball Center to Provide World Class Care Locally and here to keep you healthy and on the court!
If you have a question about an injury or orthopedic issue, feel free to contact SOSI for a consultation at (970) 875-3015.
