Message from Magnus

As we are wrapping up the spring quarter, I want to thank the broader UCI Samueli School of Engineering community for a highly successful academic year. Our rankings are the highest they have ever been. Our faculty continue to win prestigious awards. I am particularly happy to see our junior faculty do so well in this regard, with six federal, early career awards and, as seen in this newsletter, three recent Hellman Fellowships. We’ve also launched a new strategic plan centered on the Engineering+ theme, our sponsored research continues going strong, and our students bring the passion, energy and creativity that make campus such a special place. I wish you all a great summer!

UCI biomedical engineer wins

$6 million CIRM grant

Kyriacos Athanasiou, Distinguished Professor of biomedical engineering and Henry Samueli Chair in Engineering, leads a UCI research group that recently won a $6 million grant from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine to conduct preclinical trial studies of an engineered neocartilage tissue implant to treat pathologies of the temporomandibular joint.

Three UCI engineering faculty named Hellman Fellows

Eight assistant professors at UCI will receive Hellman Fellowships, which are bestowed annually to support research by junior faculty.

Workshop addresses opportunities of AI for deciphering thermal and energy science and engineering

More than 80 researchers from around the country gathered at UCI to discuss the role of advanced AI and machine learning techniques in thermal energy science and their applications at the AI for Thermal Energy Science Workshop April 17–18, 2023.

The weather cleared in time to reveal a beautiful blue sky on the evening of May 5, when nearly 200 UCI engineering and information and computer sciences alumni, faculty and friends gathered at the Inn at Mission San Juan Capistrano to celebrate six alumni for the 2023 Hall of Fame.

Six engineering graduate students named NSF fellows

Six Samueli School students have received and accepted National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) awards this year. They are among 33 recipients from UCI.
