Thank you to our PTA President
"Wisdom is knowing what to do next; virtue is doing it". Denice, you proved to be both a wise and virtuous leader. Thank you for everything you've done for this school and community. Taking a leadership role during a global pandemic is not an easy decision, but you stepped up to the challenge and we are so grateful that you did. Your ability to inspire and rally a team is exactly what we needed this year; we would not have not able to accomplish the goals we set out to without your encouragement, wise counsel and patient advice. You were at every single PTA event, supporting your team and helping wherever you could - you are truly the heart of Rockwell's PTA.
As you look back at your time with us, please know that our achievements would not have been possible without you at the helm.
Thank you from the bottom of our beagle hearts â€ïž

We still have a number of roles to fill for next year's board, and many open committee chair positions.
Our most urgent needs are listed below. Please email president@normanrockwellpta.org if you'd like to lend your time and talents to next year's PTA. No experience is necessary. Your current board will train and support you throughout the process!
VP of Fundraising: This person oversees all of our ABC (annual beagle contribution) fundraising efforts, in addition to dine-outs, Sprit-wear orders, read-a-thon programs, and any other fundraising efforts during the school year. Commitment is generally 3-5 hours per month in August/September, 1-2 hours per month the remaining months of the school year
VP of Academic Enrichment: This person oversees policies and communications with chairs of after-school and enrichment programs. Works in partnership with the school office to determine available class space, and submits building use permits. Commitment is generally 5-10 hours per month in August/September, December/January; 2-4 hours per month other months.
Art Reflections Chair: Reflections is a National arts program that allows students to submit art in 6 different categories. The Reflections chair publicizes the event, finds judges for each category, and provides electronic forms to all students who enter the contest. The chair also collects the final artwork submissions, coordinates judging, and advances qualifying submissions to the council level. Time commitment: 4-8 hours per month Sept â Dec.
Back to School BBQ Chair: This person helps to coordinate all logistics for our school wide annual âwelcome backâ event, which generally occurs in mid-late September. This person will find a vendor to provide food, will coordinate ticket sales, and will recruit volunteers for set-up and clean-up. Time commitment: 8-10 hours between August and September.
Welcome Back Coffee: This person helps to coordinate the welcome back coffee that generally takes place the Friday in September that kindergartners first start school (the chair brings coffee, arranges for pastries, and sets up near the flagpole outside). Itâs an event that welcomes all new families, and provides support for parents who have to drop off their Ks for the first time. Mr. Clark always makes a guest appearance. One time commitment of 2-3 hours.

A Note From Your Outgoing President
Hello Rockwell Families. I'd like to say thank you to all the volunteers who made this such a wonderful "rebuild" year for the PTA. Working with the dedicated volunteers on this year's board has been an absolute privilege. Our board meetings were full of laughter, inspiration, and copious amounts of due diligence. Your PTA board is comprised of dedicated parent volunteers who manage to juggle their professional and personal commitments, while still dedicating invaluable time to make Rockwell a better place for all students. I'm incredibly proud of everything the PTA board accomplished this year, and would like to share the following gratitude:
Terri Edgar, our Treasurer: First and foremost, thank you for answering our bat signal last year. If you hadn't stepped forward, we literally might have existed as a PTA this year. The Treasurer's role is demanding, and it requires meticulous attention to detail. You jumped into the role with tenacity and initiative. You are like the energizer bunny - even when the rest of us are tired and losing steam, you keep the ship pushing forward. Thank you for saying yes to every single request for extra help. You are remarkable, and we are so grateful for your tireless dedication to the students at Rockwell.
Manmeet Chaudhry Kang, our Secretary: Thank you for keeping diligent notes at all our board meetings. Itâs a difficult and tedious job (especially when the President talks as much and as fast as I do!) Your steadfast diligence ensured compliance with our 501(c)(3) requirements. Thank you also for answering so many last minute requests for help (procuring 600 cupcakes on a momentâs notice, curating lovely bouquets of flowers for our volunteer tea, etc). Iâm grateful you let your neighbor rope you into joining the board!
Lani Lum, our VP of Communications: Thank you for wearing SO MANY different hats this year. I canât believe how elegantly you juggle a demanding full-time job while parenting two kids AND volunteering countless hours every single week to PTA projects. Thank you for managing our weekly newsletter, our Facebook account, and for working so diligently on our yearbook. Thank you also for volunteering to be a Producer on this yearâs Spring play. Your ambition and non-stop momentum help motivate all of us â thank you for being so extraordinary!
Mansi Majeed, our VP of School Services: Thank you for being such a tremendous PTA leader. I donât think thereâs a single PTA project or event that doesnât have your fingerprints somewhere on it. You have an incredible gift for fostering community. When Iâm with you at the school, I am constantly amazed at how you seem to know every single staff, student, and parent. Thank you for coordinating our vision and hearing screenings, and for giving so much of your time to the Recess Wranglers program. Thank you also for chairing Heritage Night for so many years â you have created such a wonderful legacy for our school community through this annual event (which just keeps getting bigger and better!). Your devotion to the well-being of all children at Rockwell is simply inspiring.
Sri Wulfe, our VP of Volunteering: Thank you for helping to create the Recess Wranglers program, for chairing the Reflections art program this year, for helping to rewrite the standing rules, for helping to host Rockwellâs first ever âchalk party,â for curating so many lovely events during teacher appreciation week, and for organizing such a wonderful volunteer tea. As a freshman member of the board, you have certainly made a remarkable impact.
Siva Ananthakrishnan, our VP of Funds Allocation: Thank you for your many year of tireless leadership on the board. During the pandemic, you wore countless different hats. Most importantly, you helped us pivot to remote meetings. You shared endless patience and tech expertise, especially when training Gretchen and I on how to host virtual events for the kiddos. Even while working full-time at Microsoft, you are somehow able to seamlessly coordinate with our teachers and staff to ensure that all academic and classroom grants are processed. Your tireless dedication has ensured that all students have an exceptional educational experience at Rockwell. Thank you also for volunteering for all the âboringâ projects like reviewing our standing rules, mid-year financial reviews, budget committee meetings, etc. We might be a little lost without you next year!
Victoria Zuban, our Web Administrator: Thank you for all your hard work in completely revamping our PTA website this year. Thank you also for your expertise and insight as we made important tech safety and security decisions this year. And a huge thank you for answering our desperate pleas for help whenever any of us lost our password or needed help accessing something technology related.
Stephanie Wagner, our VP of Fundraising: Thanks to your incredible leadership, we were able to increase our matching funds by more than 200% over any previous year. And as Lead Producer of our Spring Play, you turned this event into an astonishing fundraiser for the first time in Rockwell history! Your tireless efforts as E-Prep chair help ensure the safety of all Rockwell children. Thank you for making sure that all classrooms have fully stocked emergency kits, and for replenishing important items in the E-prep storage unit throughout the year. You are going to be in incredible PTA President next year!
Nicole Dahl, our VP of Academic Enrichment: Thank you for your tremendous dedication to our âSchool of Excellenceâ application. We had a record number of responses to this yearâs initial survey (thanks to your diligence!). Thank you for continually coordinating with school leaders throughout the year, and for ensuring that we met all the deadlines for the âSchool of Excellenceâ designation. Thank you also for lending a helping hand with so many set-up and clean-up efforts at events this year.
Jeannine Woodyear, our VP of Membership: Thank you for bringing such humor and positivity to every single board meeting. And for sharing your exceptional pastry talents with us! Thanks to your tenacious work, we earned the âPlatinum Membership Growth Awardâ from the Washington State PTA this year. You jumped into this role (and the headache known as âMember Planetâ) with grace, enthusiasm, and a biting wit that keeps us all on our toes!
Jamie Kivela, our Disability Awareness Chair: Thank you for serving in this critical role for so many years. Your tireless dedication to disability awareness leaves a remarkable legacy at Rockwell. Thank you for working with Principal Clark to ensure that all children at Rockwell get to learn inside the classroom. Thank you for your tireless efforts and coordination with the TIES center to help make Rockwell a national leader in inclusion work.
Gretchen Knapp, our VP of Events: I canât believe you are graduating from the board! What are we going to do without you next year? When it comes to Rockwell students, you are pretty much as famous as Norman Rockwell himself. When my daughter realized that I *know* Ms. Knapp in real life, I was suddenly cool in her book. How many families still have pinch pots on their mantels because of your endless creativity? How many room parents and art docents have you trained over the years (my guess is literally hundreds). Your grit and tenacity helped carry the PTA through some very difficult times during Covid. Thank you for giving your time, energy, talents, and humor to the PTA board for so many years. You are an absolute PTA rock-star, and will likely never know what a deep impact you have had on so many different students and families over the course of your tenure on the PTA.
To all families â it was an honor and a pleasure to get to know you better this year. Rockwell is a tremendous community, and I loved serving as PTA President this year.
Sincerely,
Denice Gagner
Rockwell Elementary PTA President 2021-2022
