March is Woman’s History Month

Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987, after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March,1987 as “Women’s History Month.” Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month. Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States, and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.

Museums preserve, protect and promote one of the few irreplaceable public assets: the community, the city, and the nation’s collective memory, knowledge and history. Preserving our Dan River Region Heritage through the DMFAH is a fundamental aspect of maintaining a healthy and prosperous civil society.

5 Parks Studio collaborates with “Heart the Park”

Parks and Recreation is working with Virginia Tech Design Students through online Zoom Charettes to obtain a targeted understanding of how the Danville Neighborhood Parks: Doyle Thomas, Coates and Pumpkin Creek can fit into a variety of community building/supporting roles. The Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History is teaming up with Parks and Rec as well as all the City partners involved to engage with each neighborhood community through a meaningful art/history project.

This collaboration with Danville organizations, neighborhood residents, city staff, and other stakeholders to understand our neighborhood parks and their communities, allows the DMFAH to reach communities who need to have access to Danville’s cultural assets. The next Park event will be on March 17 at Pumpkin Creek Park from 1-3pm. Please come out to find out more about our city’s “green spaces”.

Thank you for considering the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History (DMFAH) for volunteering. At the DMFAH, we offer a variety of areas to volunteer in throughout the museum. Find your interest, and apply today at info@danvillemuseum.org!

Besides providing exciting opportunities to make a difference for yourself and others, volunteering at the DMFAH gives you valuable practical experience and personalized training in various opportunities providing guest services and museum support such as collections care, event coordination, exhibit facilitation, and assisting with camps, educational programs, marketing, and administrative duties.

Volunteering at the DMFAH also provides you with a life-long appreciation for art and history, academic credits for interns, and, as appropriate, a museum membership based on your logged hours. During Garden Week April 28, 2022 we will need many helping hands to make the DMFAH campus and the Museum look its very best.
