The City of Cambridge is launching the Safety Improvement Project on Cambridge Street, which will add separated bike lanes and make related safety improvements between Inman Square and Second Street.

As part of this project, we will:

  • Move bike lanes to be along the curb, separated from vehicles by white flex posts.
  • Shorten crossing distances for people walking.
  • Reconstruct some curb ramps.
  • Consider changes to improve the reliability and accessibility of MBTA Route 69 bus.
  • Accommodate outdoor dining.
  • Reduce on-street parking to one side of the street at a time.

These changes will align with the Cambridge Bicycle Plan and the Vision Zero Action Plan and will help us meet the requirements of the Cambridge Cycling Safety Ordinance.

Upcoming Community Events

The City will introduce the project to the public with three events:

  • Wednesday, November 29: In-Person Open House from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Valente Branch Public Library (826 Cambridge St.)
  • Saturday, December 2: In-Person Open House from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Millers River Apartments (15 Lambert St.)
  • Tuesday, December 12: Virtual Community Meeting #1 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Zoom

These events are the first series of several phases of outreach for the project. There will be more opportunities to give feedback and learn about the project in 2024.

Learn more about the project—including a tentative project schedule, planning and policy background, and ways to get involved—on the project webpage

We are currently in the planning stage for this project and do not have a plan for the street. Your feedback will help guide us as we develop concepts for community review.
