Marc Chagall's Biblical Images: The Creation of Humans (To Joshua Before Jericho)

The Art of The High Holidays brings Rosh Hashonah (Head of the Year) and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) to life through 1,500 years of Jewish art. The presentation offers a chronological and topical overview of visual art objects and their symbolism related to these two holidays. Enjoy the powerful art included in the slideshow as well as the in-depth narration.

Sukkot (Hebrew for “Tabernacles”) is a seven-day harvest festival. It is the happiest of biblical holidays and celebrates the bounty of nature. A fragile booth and four species of plants represent the agricultural world.

The Art of Sukkot includes woodcuts, etchings, illuminated manuscripts, papercuts, silver and wood etrog boxes, paintings, photographs and prints. It is a chronological and geographic overview of visual art objects and their symbolism related to Sukkot.

This program introduces a series on etchings that Chagall created based on Biblical stories. He worked on this series from 1931 to 1956. This presentation begins with Genesis 1 and continues through Genesis 43. Chagall used varied etching techniques to capture multiple textures.

Part 1 of a 3-part series

Schedule the entire series and receive $25 off each.

Each part of the series may also be enjoyed as a single

presentation for the regular fee.

JAE News

Speaker Spotlight

Joanna Homrighausen

What led you to decide to become a JAE presenter? In my day job, I teach Jewish studies at the college level. My training and teaching are Jewish texts, but I wanted to learn more about Jewish art. The best way to learn is to teach!

What do you find most rewarding about your role as a JAE presenter? Stories. Much of our teaching happens in senior communities. Sometimes an artwork will awaken a decades-dormant memory of meeting an artist long dead or seeing a now-‘classic’ painting when it was new. Other times an audience member will see their own story in a Jewish artwork. These may be Jewish stories, like Holocaust art, but they are also broader. For example, Jews have historically been a migrant people, and many immigrants can connect to feeling like an outsider or being forced to leave one’s homeland.

Who is your favorite Jewish artist? Since calligraphy and lettering arts are my first love, I think of Hebrew calligraphers such as Izzy Pludwinski and Gabriel Wolff. Recently I’ve been in love with Ben Shahn’s work, and hope to write a book about him.

Do you have a favorite JAE program? The Chagall talks are always a treat. He’s very accessible, visually entrancing, and his Jewish story has many facets.

Do you have a favorite audience member comment? “Can we have you back in two weeks?”
