Join us for this virtual event to learn about the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, a funder dedicated to supporting undervalued areas in the biomedical sciences.

 

Louis Muglia, MD, PhD, President and CEO of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, will lead the conversation. He has been involved with the Fund for more than 20 years as an award recipient and an active member of its various advisory committees. A pioneering researcher on preterm birth, Dr. Muglia has previously served faculty and leadership positions at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and Washington University in St. Louis.

 

Dr. Muglia will discuss the Fund’s mission, funding programs and priorities, grant procedures, and selection criteria. He also will answer questions about the Fund.

Visiting Professor Lecture: Laura M. Bohn, PhD

“Directing Opioid Receptor Signaling to Improve Pain Therapeutics”


Dr. Bohn is Professor and Chair of Molecular Medicine, UF Scripps Biomedical Research, University of Florida and an Affiliate Member of The Brain Institute, Florida Atlantic University.

 

Her research focuses on how G protein-coupled receptors of the opioid, serotonin and cannabinoid families mediate neurological functions. Her goal is to enhance the benefits and eliminate side effects of therapeutics for pain, addiction and mood disorders.

 

Dr. Bohn received her BS in biochemistry and BA in chemistry at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and her PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology from St. Louis University. She was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Cell Biology, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Duke University Medical Center.

 

She became an Assistant Research Professor of Cell Biology at Duke University Medical Center, an Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Psychiatry at Ohio State, and then Associate Professor of Molecular Therapeutics and Neuroscience at the Scripps Research Institute before being named Chair of Molecular Medicine.
