This year's focus is integrating 2 or more STEM disciplines with an emphasis on elementary STEM. Of course we're happy to finally see K-5 get some attention. So many students self-select out of science because they don't think they can "do" science, while others don't see how their non-STEM interests or talents open opportunities to work with exciting technology-focused or engineering companies. According to an October 2021 report from the National Academies of Science Engineering and Math, failure to connect kids to science/STEM in elementary schools directly affects long term workforce development.
Dr. Annette Venegas will introduce attendees to our Green Architects unit, through her Green Architects: The Wall Is Alive professional development session. In this session Annette will discuss her experiences of using the topic of green architecture (e.g., green roofs, reused & local building materials) and sustainable design (e.g., use of native plants & water saving techniques in landscaping) in a variety of elementary settings.
This annual conference is sponsored by SUNY Alfred State College and the NYS STEM Education Collaborative, Inc., and draws teachers and administrators from across New York State. You can find more information on the STEM Summer Institute here. More information here.
