A message from Pastor Isaac Dusenbury
|
|
I wish you could’ve seen the look on her face! I’m talking about the Epworth employee to whom I delivered nearly $500 worth of gift baskets on Monday. Thank you to all of those who participated and donated. These gifts will go directly to foster families in our area. This is not only a means by which we continue the tradition of serving God by serving others, but it’s also a significant way the church has historically functioned in its community. When we read the Book of Acts, we’re given a vision of the early church. There we see a church that frequently gathers and pools together its resources to alleviate the burdens of the needy. A Spirit of fire and fervor propelled these early Christians into a movement that refuses to rest until God’s Kingdom arrives in fullness.
Pastors tend to get excited whenever we talk about Acts. It provides a blueprint for evangelism, growth, and stewardship. It describes the adventure of ministry and the harrowing yet transformative call of discipleship. It leaves you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. I’m pleased to announce that we’ll begin a six-week sermon series based on the Book of Acts this Sunday. We’ll begin with the ascension of Jesus and discern what it means for the disciples left behind. Spoiler alert: they’re not to waste any time getting back to work! We know that you’ll enjoy this series and be more convicted in your discipleship on the other side of it.
A professor of mine once said, “Remember: the church doesn’t have a mission. Instead, the mission has a church.” I’m grateful for that lesson, and it’s a blessing to see it lived out as well. We’ll all get to do that next week when our church sends yet another group into the mission field. Please be in prayer for this team as they head to Red Bird Mission in rural Kentucky for what is sure to be a powerful experience for all involved. Since 1921 Red Bird Mission, situated in the heart of Appalachia's Cumberland Mountains, has been devoted to loving God and effectively serving Jesus Christ by loving people. I know we’ll all be greatly looking forward to hearing how this goes! I’m proud of our church in so many ways.
Let’s continue to be the church, the body of Christ, as we love our neighbors and add to our flock. Whether in worship, service, or fellowship, I hope to see you soon. May the Lord bless and keep you this week as you watch out for bikers!
Blessings,

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Prayers and Concerns
Almighty God, shield of the oppressed, hear us as we pray for the friendless and the lonely, the tempted and the unbelieving. Be merciful to those who suffer, in body and mind, to those who are in danger or distress, and who have suffered loss. Let your love surround the infirm and the aged. Be especially near to those who are passing through the valley of death. May they find eternal rest, and light at evening time.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
