Dan pursued a Master's degree in Marine Biochemistry studying water quality and its interaction with algae, which acts as a food source for oysters. Dan studied the benefits of oyster aquaculture to the surrounding environment and fell in love with the idea of water-based farming, and the plethora of benefits it provides, while simultaneously farming something that everyone loves. Fast forward two years when he finished his degree and moved to Rhode Island. Dan's wife Kaitlin loves playing a part in the farm-to-table experience while fostering a positive environmental impact.
Farm manager AJ got into oyster farming when he was in college. Growing up in New Jersey, he always knew he wanted a career that would keep him on and in the water. The satisfaction of watching his hard work go from farm to table is never something he wants to give up. Not only does AJ get to care for the crop, but also the waters and environment around him. AJ says that he finds it hard to complain about work when he spends every day on a boat.
The newest member of their team is Sophia Motta, a junior at URI studying Oceanography. She has been working with Aquidneck Island Oyster Company for the last year as a marketing/social media personnel. "Nothing gets better than working on the water," she says. As a URI student, she is thankful for the opportunity to work hands-on with a local, sustainable company that takes such pride in its work.
"Oysters take on their flavor from the water they're grown in and the food they eat, which is largely a factor in where and how they are being grown. I think it's fascinating how variable the flavor and appearance of oysters can be based on such small changes in geography and growing techniques" Dan says. Oysters from Aquidneck Island Oyster Company can be found in markets throughout the state like Belmont Market in Wakefield, Dave's Marketplace, and Andrade's Catch in Bristol, and they are available for home order and the Aquidneck Grower's Market through Local Catch. They are also available at most of the Newport Restaurant Group locations, Gulf Stream in Portsmouth, Midtown Oyster Bar in Newport, and Two Ten Oyster Bar in Wakefield.
