AESA Adds a New National Award

In Memory and Honor of

Dr. Susan Leddick

The AESA Executive Council approved a new award in honor of the late Dr. Susan Leddick that recognizes inspirational women leaders.

The Women in Leadership Executive Impact Award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated a deep commitment to the advancement of women leaders at her organization and, through her leadership, has ignited lasting and impactful change for women.

Who was Dr. Leddick?

Prior to her death in 2021, Dr. Susan Leddick worked with AESA and ESAs for over 30 years, facilitating the development of many programs and policies that make AESA the strong organization it is today.

Through Susan’s leadership, ESAs learned how to collaborate, cooperate, and leverage

resources so that every ESA within a state could strengthen its assets individually and

together through networks, designs, and statewide organizations.

In addition, Susan worked directly with the AESA Executive Council and staff to capitalize on our assets and the knowledge of our members to serve the current and future needs of our customers. The natural extension was for her to assist states in building statewide networks. Many member states such as Iowa, Ohio, Washington, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania engaged Susan’s knowledge and skills to develop internal structures for meeting their state-specific networking needs.

Medicaid Unwinding

This a reminder that as the official declaration of Medicaid as a public health emergency ends, so too does the automatic re-certification of Medicaid eligibility. Beginning April 1, 2023, this continuous coverage protection ended and eligibility will be checked for all people enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP to ensure they still qualify. During this process, known as the “unwinding,” it is estimated that 6.7 million children will lose their Medicaid coverage despite the large majority of them continue to be eligible for either Medicaid or CHIP.

What does this mean for YOUR state?

Five states — Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, New Hampshire, and South Dakota — plan to begin terminating coverage in April for some of the tens of millions of people who have remained covered under the low-income health insurance program during the pandemic. Fourteen more states will start terminating enrollees in May, followed by 20 in June and 10 in July. Oregon will be the last to start, in October.
