A Dive into the 8K Future with Industry Veteran Allan McLennan


We sat down with Allan McLennan, the Head of Media & Entertainment Americas with Atos to ask him about the latest developments in 8K production. He told us that 8K will eventually become the conduit for delivering top-quality visuals but we’re already on the path with 8K production. What’s Happening in the Technology Work Group of the 8K Association?


The 8K Association has an 8K TV Certification program. The Technology Work Group (TWG) sets the requirements for the on-screen performance and interfaces to the 8K TVs. Xiaomi 12T Pro Has a 200MP Camera & 8K Video Capture


The new Xiaomi 12T Pro smartphone can capture 8K 25fps video using its 200MP sensor. GSMArena tested the new phone and found that the 8K capture mode gave real detail benefits over 4K and that 'contrast and dynamic range are praiseworthy', and the colors are 'lively'. The camera has support for Dolby Vision. There's a sample 8K video here. GSMArena thinks the phone is a 'flagship killer' because of the 'gorgeous' display and good value for money for a high-end device.

AVPro Edge Debuts 8K 8x8 Matrix Switcher

The switcher supports 4K/120 and 8K/60, all at 4:2:0, as well as additional features in HDMI 2.1 and multiple HDR formats. It is designed for the custom install market, where the company believes it is not too early for 8K installs.

New EU Energy Regulation Could Ban 8K TVs in 2023


As we have noted previously, March 2023 could spell trouble for 8K TVs and some other advanced TV technologies because of restrictive new EU energy regulations. This flatpanelsHD article summarizes the issue but also adds information on many 4K and 8K models illustrating the large gap between existing energy consumption and the new regulation requirements. One possible workaround is a default out-of-box mode with very low luminance.
