  • Harbor Commission: One (1) for Harbor Commission members (term expires in 2024) – applicants must be Village residents unless the Village Council approves proposed ordinance 2023-11 to allow no more than three (3) members to reside outside the Village limits.
  • Housing Commission: One (1) Housing Commission member (term expires 2027) – must be a Village resident.
  • Planning Commission: One (1) Planning Commission member (term expires 2025) – applicant must be an elector of the Village.
  • Zoning Board of Appeals: One (1) for the Zoning Board of Appeals (term expires 2025) – applicant must be an elector of the Village.

Employers Invited to National Apprenticeship Week Information Sessions

 

NORTHWEST LOWER, MI— Businesses and organizations from across northwest Lower Michigan are invited to attend a variety of apprenticeship information sessions being hosted by Northwest Michigan Works! in celebration of National Apprenticeship Week. 

 

The sessions will include an overview of U.S. Department of Labor registered apprenticeships, the simplified process of developing or growing a program and using apprenticeships to fill workforce gaps. There will be multiple occupations explored with a focus on the childcare and information technology industries. 

 

The information sessions will also include an expert employer apprenticeship panel who will share their apprenticeship experience while answering questions about the practicality of the program. 

 

All types of industries, union and non-union, small or large are encouraged to attend. The workshops will help employers prepare to launch their own customized programs and learn more about Northwest Michigan Works! wraparound services.

 

The information sessions will be held at the locations, dates, and times listed below.

 

November 8, 11:30 am – 1:00 pm, Registered Apprenticeship Information Session, Mancelona Township Hall, 9610 M-88, Mancelona.


November 16, 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm, IT Apprenticeship Information Session, Northwest Michigan Works! Conference Center, 1209 S Garfield Ave, Traverse City.

 

November 16, 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm Childcare Apprenticeship Workshop, Northwest Michigan Works! Conference Center, 1209 S Garfield Ave, Traverse City.

 

National Apprenticeship Week is held each year to showcase the successes and value of registered apprenticeships. Registered apprenticeships are offered through the U.S. Department of Labor and are a proven training method for employers to build a talent pipeline of highly skilled, educated employees. Northwest Michigan Works! provides technical assistance and administrative support for registered apprenticeships, including development and implementation guidance.

It encompasses everything from recreational boating to commercial activity on the Great Lakes to marina innovation and infrastructure.


20Fathoms Lands $7.3 Million In State And Federal Grants, Plots New Chapter

For its fifth birthday, 20Fathoms is getting $7.3 million.

That windfall, coming to the Traverse City tech incubator courtesy of two major grants, will allow the organization to kick off a brand-new chapter – one Executive Director Eric Roberts dubs “20Fathoms 2.0.” The organization will use the funds to implement a three-year strategic growth plan that will expand its geographic reach, launch new programs, provide early-stage companies with access to capital funds, grow or facilitate partnerships with local and non-local organizations, bring big-time research projects to Traverse City, and grow the region’s budding reputation as a tech epicenter.

Nature Trivia Night

Thursday, November 16th, 2023 - 6:00 pm (2 hrs), $5 per person at Short's Elk Rapids

Join us for Nature Trivia Night at the Short's Pull Barn in Elk Rapids! Get your team of 2-6 players together and get ready to stretch your brain with 5 rounds of clever, family-friendly trivia. Don't worry if you're not a nature expert; questions will draw from other areas of knowledge - like movies and music - as well. $5 per player, which supports GRNA. Players will pay upon arriving at Short's.


Painting Animals in Action

Saturday, November 18th, 2023 - 1:00 pm (2 hrs), $10 per person

We will use a variety of painting and drawing media to learn how to illustrate animals in action. Birds, bunnies, and bobcats are among the subjects we will explore.  We'll learn the basic shapes and textures that make these creatures recognizable.  Join us for a playful afternoon! Jewelry donations are accepted also at the library during business hours.

National Writer's Series Fall Writing Class for Middle Schoolers

Dates: 10/12, 10/19, 10/26, 11/2, 11/9, 11/16

Format: Cherryland Middle School (Elk Rapids) and Online via Zoom

Time: 5:30-7:30 pm

Class Size: 12-15

Grade Level: Middle School; 5-8th Grades

Where do poems and stories come from? This class will explore the various and many sources of inspiration and how to channel them into stories and poems. We will experiment with using objects, memories, found language, music, video, visual arts, and more as sources to create work of our own.
