During the past several years, home security systems, professionally installed or monitor-it-yourself systems, have become an integral part of safeguarding our homes and loved ones. However, owning a home security system is just the first step towards ensuring the safety of your property. To make the most of these systems, the Inverness Police Department recommends the following best practices:
First call Inverness’ 911 Dispatch Center for all alarm activations:
When a home security system alarm is activated, your professional monitoring service or the individual monitoring remotely should
FIRST call
Northwest Central Dispatch System at
847-590-3478. If you monitor your security system yourself, add NWCDS number
847-590-3478 to your contact list to call dispatch directly.
Arm and Monitor Your System:
Always arm your home security system, even when you're just stepping out for a short period. Utilize remote monitoring capabilities through dedicated mobile apps or web portals to stay connected with your system while away. Set up alerts and notifications to be instantly notified of any suspicious activities or system malfunctions. Mayor Tatooles has suspended any fines for false alarms. If regular false alarms occur, the Inverness Police Department can assist in determining the cause and suggesting remedies.
Install a Multi-Layered Security System:
Utilize a multi-layered approach to home security by integrating various components such as alarms, motion sensors, glass break, and surveillance cameras. Each layer adds an additional level of protection, making it harder for intruders to breach your defenses. Ensure that these systems are regularly maintained to guarantee their proper functioning.
Utilize Surveillance Cameras:
Strategically place surveillance cameras to monitor vulnerable areas such as entrances, driveways, and backyard. Opt for high-resolution cameras with night vision capabilities for clear footage, even in low-light conditions. Connect the cameras to a digital video recorder (DVR) or cloud-based storage system to ensure continuous recording and easy access to footage when needed.
Implement Proper Lighting:
A well-lit exterior deters potential intruders by eliminating hiding spots and making them more visible. Install motion-activated lights around the perimeter of your home, particularly near entrances, pathways, and dark corners. Additionally, consider using smart lighting solutions that allow you to control and schedule lighting remotely, creating the illusion of an occupied home even when you're away.
Secure Doors and Windows:
Fortify your home's entry points by using sturdy doors made of solid materials like metal or solid wood. Reinforce them with deadbolt locks and consider installing a doorbell camera or a peephole to verify visitors. Remember to keep windows and doors locked when not in use, including when you are inside the house.
9:00 pm Bedtime Routine
Conduct a 9 pm routine to lock all doors and windows, paying special attention to vulnerable entry points. Secure sliding doors with locks and ensure exterior lights are functioning properly. Verify garage door is closed and entry door from garage is secure. Arm your security system.
By following these best practices, you can enhance the effectiveness of your security system and create a safer living environment. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Inverness Police Department at 847-358-7766 or
