Increasing Food Access for BIPOC communities


On Friday, September 23rd, AK Health and Social Services started the day off strong, packaging around 5,000 pounds of food at the Masjid Salaam Mosque. Co-Executive Directors Abdikhadar and Candace were joined by a group of Bates college student volunteers, all working together to get the job done. We received the food from our partners Good Food Shepherd, through the community redistribution program. It was distributed to community members at Kennedy Park in Lewiston. and most of the food was distributed! The remaining bags of food were delivered to Hope Haven, a local shelter in Lewiston.


Masjid Salaam Mosque, another member of the AK Collaborative and AKHSS recently opened a food pantry inside the mosque that gives out food every Thursday between 1 PM-3PM. 

Another Successful Outdoor Vaccine Clinic


AK Collaborative members hosted another successful vaccine clinic at Kennedy park on September 23, 2022. AK Health, Her Safety Net, Masjid Salaam Mosque and LA Family were joined again by York Emergency Management Agency to provide vaccines. The event was also attended by the Lewiston Mayor, Lewiston Public Schools Superintendent and Maureen Leary from MECAP to provide support to the clinic and speak to the Media. 

community members gathered with their families to get vaccinated, grab some fresh proe, and interact with one another. York EMA had a great system set up to register, distribute information (with the help of several translators), and vaccinate each community member with care. As a result, 66 community members were vaccinated,

The AK Collaborative Chairwoman, Among 17 Selected Advisory Council for the Office of Population Health Equity (OPHE)

Amina Hassan the Chairwoman of the AK Collaborative and the founder and Executive Director of Her Safety Net is among seventeen individuals selected for The Health Equity Advisory Council. The Council is a pilot initiative and part of a broader set of OPHE-led efforts to advance health equity across Maine.

 Joining Maine Children’s Alliance Convention


AK Collaborative Leader participated in a productive panel discussion at Maine Children’s Alliance Children’s Cabinet. Representing the Immigrant and BIPCO communities in Maine, Her Safety Net and AK Health and Social Services was on the table with six other panelists from various backgrounds to discuss how COVID-19 has impacted minority communities and organizations.

Recruiting at the Bates volunteer Fair

On September 14, members from the AK Collaborative attended the Bates Volunteer Fair along with multiple other service providers. The collaborative was able to recruit dozens of students to intern and volunteer with the organization this coming school year. We look forward to working with them!

Abdikhadar Shire, founder and Co-Executive Director of AK Health and Social Services and pioneer of the AK Collaborative was among the 40 individuals honored by Mainebiz in their next UP 40 under 40 award.

Partner appreciation dinner

At our Westminster office location, member organizations of the AK Collaborative, AKHSS, and Her Safety Net hosted a dinner to celebrate the work of our wonderful collaborators, particularly the student volunteers and interns from Bates College. Mayor Carl Sheline, Martha Deschaine from the Harward Center, and State Representative for the 60th District, Kristen Cloutier all attended along with other representatives from the community.

Co-Executive Director Candace Johnson who is also a Bates College Alumni was able to share her experience joining AK Health and Social Services as a student volunteer and coming up the ranks to become a leader in the organization. 

AK Collaborative Announces New Advisory Committee.

The AK Collaborative debuts its new Members Advisory Committee. The body aims to help the Collaborative organizations design programs that reflect the needs of the immigrants and BIPOC communities, with the goal of reducing healthcare disparities.. As the collaborative braces for two years of building capacity, infrastructure and strategic planning to reduce the healthcare disparities of marginalized and underserved communities, the advisory committee will help act as ambassadors of the community. The members include:
