FROM THE RECTOR
We don’t always get the chance to reflect at a moment of transition. As often as not, we are fully occupied with finishing task A so that we can begin task B. Sometimes we don’t even have the capacity to notice that it is a moment of transition. But I noticed this week a kind of micro-transition in our year at church. The two exciting adult formation series with which we began the year ended this week and two exciting new series begin next week. Rabbi Shai Beloosesky will lead three sessions of our regular Women of the Bible series on Sundays at 9:30, and on Tuesday nights on zoom we’ll be reading Hospitable Planet by Stephen Jurovics.

It's not a major shift—just different topics and leaders at the same times and places as the classes they’re replacing. But it’s a small transition, which sent me back to the big book of things going on at Saint Paul’s that we published a few weeks ago. In a moment of minor transition, I reflected back on our bigger goals, as represented in that big book of stuff. First, I remembered our insistence then that “we want to be the community with which you find your role in God’s story of redemption” (to quote myself, embarrassingly). And second, I remembered our framing of that big book not as a program guide but as an invitation to go deeper with us in your life of discipleship. This is what we’re up to with these formation offerings, and deeper attention to children and youth, and energized outreach programs, and extra opportunities to gather to pray and eat and talk with each other. I hope you’ll join us for these two formation opportunities, but even more than that I hope you’ll hear again the invitation to find your place in God’s story here. The Spirit is always already at work. Come and see.

2023 STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN
From the Stewardship Committee
Pledges (faithful stewardship) come in various amounts, in different percentages of income, and in gifts of time and talent from all over our diverse parish. Soon you’ll be receiving a pledge card. We are asking all Saint Paul’s households to complete and return a pledge card online or by mail, and to please consider an increase over last year. If pledging has not been your practice, we encourage you to join this year’s campaign. This helps the budgeting process and allows the Vestry and Finance Committee to more accurately address the 2023 priorities.

Please prayerfully consider what your financial stewardship means in the context of your personal spiritual journey and your place in the story of Saint Paul’s Church.

2023 Stewardship Committee:
Bill Ford, Committee Chair; Cameron Nixon, Senior Warden; Catherine Boardman, Junior Warden; Fr. LaRue Downing; Fr. Eric Biddy, Rector

Women of the Bible
Three Sundays beginning on October 16
9:30 AM, The Berlin Room
Women of the Bible Formation series, led by Rabbi Shai Beloosesky from the Reform Congregation Children of Israel (CCI), returns in October for 3 Sundays. These sessions will focus on stories in the Torah from the women's perspective and examine the influence of women in the narrative that is often minimized because of the preponderance of male writers in the World’s Great Religious texts: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Discussion will focus on the interpretation of the text and the meanings ascribed by contemporary thinkers.

Our first session October 16th:
Sarah and Hagar - Abraham's Wife and His First Concubine. Biblical Reference: Genesis 16:1-16 and 21:8-21
St. Nicholas Choir (age 5 - grade 2)
Canterbury Choir (grades 3-9)
Sunday's 9:25 - 10:00 AM
The Canterbury and St. Nicholas Choirs will begin rehearsals at 9:25 AM Sunday morning as scheduled.
For more information about our choir programs, please contact Keith Shafer.

ALL children inherently know God, but it is up to us to give them the language of the Christian faith so they can grow to make meaning of our faith in their own lives. Godly Play is a profound method rooted in Montessori principles that forms child spirituality by attending to their natural gifts for wonder and discovery. We cannot wait to welcome your children each Sunday!

Contact Kim Butler for more information.

Mid-Week Eucharist in the Chapel
Thursdays, 11:30 AM
A mid-week Eucharist in the Chapel begins at 11:30 am. Lunch in the Berlin Room follows at 12 noon with a weekly Bible study (more information below.) Join us as your schedule allows: Come for Eucharist and lunch, lunch and Bible study, or stay for all three. (So that we may honor mid-day schedules, lunch is scheduled for 15 minutes and will continue through the Bible study conversations.)
Lectio at Lunch
Thursdays, 12 Noon, The Berlin Room
Join us for lunch and a Bible study – we've made it easy!

This small group format begins with lunch. As we continue sharing a meal, three biblical lessons are read by aloud by members of the group, followed by a reflection from Brian McLaren’s We Make the Road by Walking. We conclude our time together engaging with the reflection. Much of the work of the Holy Spirit in formation is in forming relationship. As the title suggests we make the road by walking together. We invite you to join this small group as your schedule allows.

You may bring your own lunch or share in the meal provided. This week’s menu: hearty vegetable casserole and salad, tea and water. A lunch RSVP is required by midnight Tuesday: online or by email to Elisabeth Price, and donations are requested to cover the cost of lunch each week.

Sit and Wait

This is an open group with no limit on the number of participants. Please email Suzanne Pursley-Crotteau or contact by phone at (706) 910-9331 for further information and/or to enroll in the sit.

Baptism Offered

The Prayer Book notes Holy Baptism is especially appropriate on four dates: at the Easter Vigil, on the Day of Pentecost, on All Saints' Day or All Saints' Sunday, and on the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord.

We will celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism on Sunday, November 6. All who wish to be baptized are invited to contact Fr. Eric.

Save the date for Walk for Water
November 12, 2022
CSRA Walk for Water returns this year and once again Saint Paul's is the midway point of the walk. We're excited to support this event and invite you to join this important work.

The Walk for Water puts a creative twist on the typical “fundraising walk.” On the morning of Saturday, November 12, we expect a thousand people to walk, carrying empty pails, from the SRP Park baseball field in North Augusta to Saint Paul’s parking lot by the River Walk, where they will fill their buckets and begin the return trek along Reynolds and 13th Streets. This walk connects us with the trek billions make every single day to carry home untreated water for basic subsistence.

You can support this event by joining our walking team, volunteering to serve as hospitality at Saint Paul's, or giving to our team. Save the date! More details to come.
