The Haven Quarterly Newsletter
Dear Haven family,

I hope this spring is treating each of you well and that you’re making up for some lost time over these past few years and finally planning some fun trips later this summer! Your Haven family has been very busy in recent months and I just wanted to highlight some successes and also give you an idea for what is on the horizon for us here. I hope this newsletter finds you well and look forward to seeing each of you sometime very soon.

I would also like to take the time to honor the residents we have lost over the past few months. Marge Brantley, Christopher McGrorty, Louise Haslem, and Mary Gillingham have all recently passed away while living at The Haven. This has been quite a bit of loss all at once for our residents and staff as we are such a small tight knit community. We have been supporting each other through this grief journey and have found ways to honor each of the deceased in our day to day. We are blessed to have Dr. JoAnne Grace, Spiritual Care Coordinator for Northwest Colorado Health Hospice come on Mondays to provide one-on-one counseling to any interested resident. Marge, Chris, Louise, and Mary will forever be a part of The Haven’s history and we send our loving support to each of their family members.

Sincerely,

Adrienne
SUCCESSES
At the beginning of February we had a couple, Doc and Thelma, move into The Haven – they were long-time residents of Hayden (Mt. Harris) and most recently have been living in Oklahoma. The husband helped plant trees around The Haven during construction in the 1990’s! And the wife stayed here 15 years ago after a hip surgery and has told her family ever since that she wants to live and die here at The Haven. We are honored that it has come full circle and we get to be here for them now. Meet Doc and Thelma – here is a biography on them!
Our 2nd annual Laps for Love was a success and we saw a lot more engagement in its second year! Thank you for helping to spread the word and we hope it continues to grow each year. A huge shout out to the Town of Hayden for supporting The Haven residents by grooming a cross-country ski track around our property! Our residents love seeing our community members bring their dogs, kids, and different modes of transportation (snowshoes, skate skis, classic skis, and even on foot)!
We got a pool/ping pong table!! This was a request from one of our residents during our annual resident survey in the fall of last year and we were able to make their wish come true!
Shout out to Bethany from Outlaw Apiaries for donating honey to each of our residents and staff for Valentine’s Day! We are still using it in our hot tea every day and we are so grateful for your support!
In March our residents volunteered to help sell daffodils for the annual Hospice fundraiser!
Congratulations to our new shift leads!!

I was born in eastern South Dakota, still have family all over there and try to visit as often as possible. I grew up here in Colorado, over 30+ years, where I love to go camping, hiking and fishing. I've worked here at The Haven now for over 3 years, I like to organize and enjoy helping others.

I have the best job ever at The Haven - I get greeted with hugs and smiles the second I walk in the door! I love taking care of our residents and making them feel the comforts of home and helping them be fulfilled in their daily lives. Seeing the residents overcome challenges and be proud of themselves is the best part of my job

ON THE HORIZON
We are in need of some meal support in the month of May! We are replacing BOTH our kitchen and dining room floors the week of May 23 and we could use some meal support throughout that week. The requests are through the Wednesday after Memorial Day just in case the project takes longer than expected – but we’d really like to prioritize getting meal support the week of May 23.
Do you like to garden? We have quite a few green thumbed residents who would love a friend to come and garden with and support them! We have a lot of opportunity for gardening at The Haven if you or anyone you know would be interested in assisting us!

COVID UPDATE
We are now required to ensure everyone is “up to date” with their COVID vaccinations – “up to date” means a person has received all recommended doses in their primary series of COVID-19 vaccine, and one booster dose when eligible.

  • Please plan to show proof of vaccination when you visit so we can make a copy of it.
  • If you are eligible for a booster shot then you must have one in order to be able to participate in communal dining/outings with your loved one.
  • All visitors, residents, and staff must wear a mask at all times while inside our building. If you are up to date with your COVID vaccination then you may take your mask off only while actively eating or drinking.
  • If you are unvaccinated or not up to date with the COVID vaccine, then please do not take your mask off at all while inside our building.
  • We also still ask that you call 276-4484 in advance of your visit to let us know and also that you are screened by a staff upon arrival and use hand-sanitizer before entering. Please do not visit if you have any flu-like symptoms or have had recent exposure to COVID.

Also, on March 29 the CDC updated its recommendation to allow certain people to receive a second booster dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. The people who may receive a second booster dose at least 4 months after receiving a first booster dose of any authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine include:

  • Those who received the J & J vaccine for both their primary vaccine and booster dose
  • Adults aged 50 years and older
  • People aged 12 years of older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised

Learn more here about the CDC’s updated recommendations. If you need information on where to get a booster shot here is Routt County’s vaccine information page and here is Moffat County’s vaccine information page.

The Haven will host a booster clinic on Tuesday April 26 from 11:30am-1:30pm for interested residents and staff – please note the second booster is not required in order to be considered “up to date” but it is recommended if you are eligible.
