From the Principal

Dear St. Brendan Families,

We have only 7 more days left in the school year! We still have plenty of learning left to be had and, of course, lots of fun and annual traditions. Please be sure to pay careful attention to many of the important details in the bulletin below. As a reminder, this Friday is the end of our third trimester and will be a 12:45 PM early release. Extended care is available as normal.

As we prepare to end our school year, I want to let you know that two of our staff members will be retiring at the end of this year. Mrs. Elizabeth Vandenberg, our current kindergarten aide, will be retiring after 22 years as an instructional aide at St Brendan. Mrs. Susan Sturgeon will be retiring after 9 years as our extended care director. We are so blessed to have had these two amazing women on our staff at St. Brendan and we wish them the very best in retirement. They will both forever be part of our St. Brendan community and will be around next year as substitute instructional aides/teachers. If you see them around, please give them your sincere thanks for the wonderful contributions they have made on our community.

Blessings,

Catherine Shumate

St. Catherine of Siena is known by many to be a very holy woman. She is one of only four female Doctors of the Church (saints whose writing or preaching is outstanding for guiding the faithful in all periods). Many people think she was a nun, but she wasn’t! She was really a lay person who had taken simple vows to become a 3rd order Dominican. Third Order Dominicans may work or live outside a convent or monastery and are not technically considered nuns or monks. St Catherine once had a vision where God showed her crosses of various sizes (meaning burdens or hardships one must carry throughout their life). He told her to pick her cross. St. Catherine chose the biggest cross, intending to be a witness to God through living a life full of hardship. God told her no, she couldn’t have that one, that the biggest cross was intended for those whose vocation was the married life!

So, if you have ever thought that being married and raising kids was hard work, it is! God acknowledges that the biggest burdens are born by married people. Worrying about your children, trying to bring them up in a world that doesn’t know God, seeking harmony, teaching virtues, loving your spouse even when life if busy or hard; all these things are some of the many hardships we bear when we choose marriage. But, it is also blessed with so many graces, as anyone who has children will tell you! If you ever feel troubled or stressed in your relationship or in raising your children, praying to some married couple saints might be helpful. St. Isidore and St. Maria de la Cabeza, Blessed Luigi and Maria Beltrame, St. Vincent and St. Waldetrudis, Mary the Mother of God and St. Joseph, Saints Louis Martin and Zelie Guerin, are some of the married saints you can read about in this article.

School Carnival Thank You

A big thank you to our 8th grade class and parents for putting in so much time and effort to make our school carnival so fun this year. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Andre, Mari Davenport, Krissy Adams, Story Fix, and Shauna Castillo for planning the carnival, and to Katie Taylor, Summer Legg, Sally Skinner, and Rebecca Bonser for coming to help at the carnival.

Covid-19 Dashboard

We will be using our weekly bulletin to communicate positive Covid-19 cases in our community.

Dashboard Update for the week of May 26- June 1

Positive Covid-19 Cases: 9

As you may be aware, cases have been rising across the county. We are in close contact with the health department and Office for Catholic Schools. We want to remind you that layering additional mitigation strategies can help curb the spread:

  • wearing a mask
  • screening for symptoms
  • COVID rapid and PCR testing

While mask wearing is not a requirement, it is a way that can help curb the spread of COVID.  We, do however, REQUIRE symptom screening before sending your student to school. If your student has symptoms, do not send your student to school until they have been cleared to attend by ruling out COVID via a test. If your student has tested negative, we ask that you test again 1-2 days later to confirm the negative result.

If Your Child Develops Symptoms, What Should You Do?

  • Regardless of vaccination status, keep your child home.
  • Students should have a COVID-19 test (rapid home test and/or PCR test) performed as soon as possible after symptoms present. The school can offer free testing to your child or provide you with at-home testing. Please call or e-mail Mrs. Murnane: secretary@school.saintbrendan.org to arrange for testing.
  • Siblings of students that develop symptoms, or test positive, are encouraged to wear a high-quality, well-fitting mask (KN95) to school to prevent any potential spread in others grades/classrooms until COVID test results are available.

St. Brendan School remains committed to ensuring a safe and healthy learning environment for our students, faculty, and staff. Please contact the main office if you have any questions or concerns.

Field Day & Variety Show - June 9th

Field Day.jpg

Thursday, June 9th will be our annual Field Day and Variety Show!

Field Day is a fun tradition at St. Brendan School. Students will participate in a lot of games and activities hosted by our PE teacher, Mr. Frauenholtz and our current 7th grade (rising 8th grade) class. This is a non-uniform dress day, but students should dress in their class colors. Teachers will share class colors in their newsletters.

variety show.jpg

The annual Variety Show will take place on Thursday, June 9th from 1:15 pm to 2:45 pm in the school gym. The Variety Show has been a long-standing tradition at our school. It is a very enjoyable and entertaining afternoon for all students, staff, siblings, and parents. The show allows our students an opportunity to share their talents such as acting, skits, singing, dancing, gymnastics, comedy or playing a musical instrument (just to name a few).

Get ready and start practicing! It will be here before you know it. Sign up information is in the Wednesday envelope. Please limit acts to about 3-4 minutes.

Middle School Electives

Requesting Teachers for Next Year

Even though summer break doesn’t begin for a couple of weeks, we are already enthusiastically preparing for next year’s middle school electives! This year’s elective offerings were our best yet, and they included courses like journalism, robotics, cross country, Star Wars philosophy, fine art, drama, horticulture, and more! We are always open to new and exciting offerings for our students, so we are absolutely willing to bounce around ideas if you are interested. In particular, I would love to see a photography and strategy game elective next year as I think our students would truly love these!

Teaching an elective is a great way for our middle school students to reach out to our school community, so please help if you can. Our electives next year will be on Fridays from 2:00-2:55; if we don’t have school on a Friday, or if there is an early release, there will not be an elective that day. Elective teachers will also receive volunteer hours for their service to the school! In order for us to continue our amazing and unique electives program in future years, we need awesome parents like you to help; our middle school teachers and students truly appreciate your assistance.  Please reach out to me (TimL@school.saintbrendan.org) if you would be willing to offer a course.

Thank you so much for your time!

Mr. Langston
