Board Retreat Focuses on 4 Themes
for Upcoming Fiscal Year
board and staff members
On May 12, we held a strategy session with WDBCCC board members. District 2 Supervisor Candace Andersen opened the session, followed by Marla Stuart, Director of Contra Costa County Employment & Human Services.

The board structured the day around four key themes and strategies:

  1. Creation and expansion of "earn and learn" models.
  2. Addressing and serving the most vulnerable populations and communities in the county.
  3. Development of a community business resource center focusing on small, minority and micro businesses.
  4. Incorporation of race, equity, diversity and inclusion (REDI) principals in all business outreach strategies.

These four strategies will be the focal point as the Board establishes key priorities and develops an execution plan to address workforce challenges in the new fiscal year.

Blog Article: 'The Employee Surge
That Didn't Happen'
personal care provider
In March, we launched a blog series in which we discussed America’s employment phenomenon commonly referred to as “The Great Resignation.” An employer survey we conducted earlier this year about Contra Costa County's response to The Great Resignation revealed numerous insights, including labor needs in the health care and restaurant industries.

Our most recent blog article, "The Employee Surge That Didn't Happen," explores the stories behind the numbers. We interviewed two business owners, Johana Segura of 24/7 Nightingale Home Care and Kevin Weinberg of Walnut Creek Yacht Club. Both thought a post-COVID-19 world would bring a surge of new employees, but it hasn't happened yet.
Celebrating Pride Month: Equity and Inclusion for LGBTQ Workers
Our focus is on achieving equity in the Contra Costa County workforce - for all workers and employers. With that goal in mind, we highlight June as Pride Month and are featuring Out & Equal Workplace Advocates, a national organization based in Oakland that works exclusively on LGBTQ workplace equality.
Job Seeker Finds Road to Success

Now she is on the road to making her and her daughter's dreams a reality. She worked with Rubicon Programs to secure a grant funded by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act that paid for her truck driver training.
