A MESSAGE FROM The Rev. Tina Rathbone

Today we are preparing to welcome our interns to Gideon’s Garden for the first time. This evening, seven young people and their parents and guardians will gather with Joel, Annalise, Pennie and I under the tent, and together we will share stories and a simple meal. Coming, as it does, just before our community planting day, this humble gathering feels like a small, real way to honor the lives of all those lost in Buffalo and Uvalde – if only because one thing we can all do in the face of such terrible violence is work towards deepening connection and community.

I don’t mean this in any kind of abstract sense, but instead as a real work between and among us all. As one of my most important teachers has written: “Community is not an ideal; it is people. It is you and I.” This means that the work of community it isn’t always easy. Making real room for those who are genuinely different from ourselves can be confusing and even fraught at times. During these days of such deep polarization, however, what choice do we have but to come together in love, and do our best to respect and support one another, young and old, rich and poor, native and newly arrived, queer and straight and black and brown and white? We need one another other, that’s the thing. And as long as we manage to remember that, we will be half way there…

GIDEON'S GARDEN
Planting Day June 6th 10:00AM
at Gideon's Garden. Bring gloves, water, a hat, and a trowel if you have it!
On Wednesday May 25th Danny and Fisher came over to lay the plastic at Gideon's Garden. We found many excellent rocks, told jokes and walked away covered in a dusty layer of soil.

When to come join us this week:
Monday 9-12PM
Wednesday 9-12PM
Friday 1-4PM
On Thursday morning I stopped by the People's Pantry to set up a small table of seedlings. These are gifted to our community from Gould Farm and my friend Kyle Stanton at North Plain Farm. All the seedlings were taken home that day. There were tomatoes, kale, swiss chard, leeks, onions, cilantro, collards and tomatillos.

 WELCOME JOEL!
Joel Jorgensen will start officially at Gideon's Garden on Wednesday, June 1.

Joel’s renewed relationship with agriculture and the earth can be said to be bound together with his faith and work in the church. Working on farms everywhere from his home in Iowa to Minnesota, Arkansas, and Michigan, to California and now Massachusetts, Joel has come to consider farming as more than a job, but rather a discipline through which he and others may be nurtured and formed to the needs of the earth and the communities around him. Joining Grace and Gideon’s Garden, he hopes to bring to the field the breadth of life experience he’s had so far with the depth his ideas and education have given him. When not getting his hands dirty, Joel can be found reading and studying any number of topics which he is almost always dying to talk about.
Spring Cleaning......De-cluttering?
Or cleaning out your garage?

Gideon Garden's Joel Jorgensen and his roommate are looking for help furnishing their new apartment in Great Barrington. They have very little by way of household goods and are – in his words - pretty much ‘starting from scratch.’ If you have any furniture, lamps, or kitchen items you no longer want, please reach out to Joel and he will be happy to come and pick it up. Joel’s email address is [email protected]
Many thanks !
COMMUNITY IN FAITH

Our three-parish Community in Faith group meets every Tuesday at 7 PM.
The readings discussed will include the Gospel that is in Tuesday’s Child for that week. Our study will be facilitated by Rev. Tina.

We will meet over Zoom and will focus on the ways stories from the Gospel come to life through our own journeys of love, struggle and (sometimes stumbling) faith. Come join us!

Way of the Cross" video walk across MA
invites prayer & action to end gun violence.
Even with strong gun safety laws already in place in Massachusetts, statistics gathered by Everytown for Gun Safety show that in an average year, 244 people die and 688 are wounded by guns in the state, and guns are the fourth leading cause of death among children and teens here. Nationally, gun deaths continue to be on the rise in the U.S., with gun murders increasing sharply in recent years and gun suicides accounting for a majority of U.S. gun deaths, according to the Pew Research Center.

UKRAINE CRISIS FUND: Urgent aid for 4 million — Give now
CARE’s immediate crisis response aims to reach 4 million with your help.
Give now to rush urgently needed water, food, hygiene kits, and ongoing support for Ukrainian families.
The following note is from Ludmyla (Myla), who Andrea Saville White met through a knitting, and weaving website community.

I live in NJ with my husband and our two daughters, but I was born in Ukraine - Zhytomyr, a small town near Kyiv, and lived for 21 years in Kharkiv, Ukraine. All my grandparents, great grandparents, uncles, and aunts are buried there. My first school, first love, first steps, first friends, best friends, college and smiles and laughter, and peace - all left in the past.

What can I say without tears - I stand against this horrible war; I stand with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. So, so many of my friends and their families and some of my relatives are still left in Ukraine all over the country.

We try and help every single day with whatever we can - whether it’s meds, trying to get people out from hot spots - like from under the shelling in Kharkiv and Dnipro - volunteer with local organizations, send help to so many of my friends who are refugees in Poland, Romania, Hungary, Germany, and Latvia, and help our amazing volunteers who are right there on the ground whether it’s on the border or in Ukraine.

Days begin with checking if all the people I know are alive and end with checking on the news and what I could help with following.

I can’t be on the front lines and fight for my homeland physically, but I can knit and help with information.

NO WAR. Spread the word. Don’t stay silent.
May there be PEACE in the world.

Babies are placed in the Home when their mother has died and they cannot be cared for at home.
It costs about $1,500 to support a baby over the time needed for the child to grow old enough to return to their home. Many years ago we at Grace decided to support babies at the Mampong Babies Home in Ghana at the rate of $1,500 per year. Your donations help us reach that goal each year. You can bring money or checks to church on Sundays and place in the jar near the Welcome table or send a check to Grace Church, PO Box 114, Great Barrington, MA 01230.

Rooted and rising in love: A summer solstice retreat
In-Person with the Rev. Dr. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas

Tuesday, June 21 • $80 (includes lunch) financial assistance available
9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
(registration and coffee begin at 9:00; program starts at 9:30 a.m.)
Led by the Rev. Dr. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas

As we celebrate the beginning of summer and the Northern Hemisphere’s longest day of the year, let’s reflect together on our sources of courage and hope. In the face of converging social and ecological crises, what spiritual practices and perspectives can sustain us? As we struggle to protect the web of life and to create a more just society, where do we turn for meaning and strength?

This one-day retreat, held in the beautiful landscape of the Rolling Ridge Retreat & Conference Center in North Andover, will include a mix of presentations, small group conversations, individual reflection, and free time for contemplative wandering and prayer. Together we will explore a framework for the heart to help us become compassionate, prophetic leaders who can take up the mantle of moral leadership that this decisive moment in history requires.

During the pandemic, Rev. Margaret presented this retreat online in several venues. Even if you’ve reflected on this material before, our June retreat will give us a chance to absorb the same material in each other’s embodied presence and in the company of a lake, woods, hiking trails, and an outdoor labyrinth and chapel.

Retreatants are welcome to stay overnight for an extra charge, by making arrangements with Guest Services Director, Lee O'Brien ([email protected]).

To request financial assistance from Diocese of Western MA, contact Kim Foster ([email protected]).

Day of Pentecost
Whitsunday
John 14:8-17 (25-27)

Philip said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, `Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.

"If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you."

"I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid."

Notes from the Vestry Meeting, May 22

At this meeting we welcomed Annalise Clausen, Director of Farming at Gideon’s Garden. Tina, Pennie and Annalise provided many updates having to do with the upcoming planting day, the internship program and the happy news that there is a good shade tent for use by all this year. Pennie Curry, our Junior Warden, also described the new Zoom set up we will be using in the office complete with a large video screen, dedicated computer and soundbar. We have recognized that it is imperative to improve the experience of those who attend Centering Prayer and the weekly Contemplative Eucharistic along with those who attend meetings remotely. It is clear we will continue to be using this hybrid model of communications and we want to be certain we are offering the best experience possible.

Our New Prayer Basket

We welcome you to use our new prayer basket.
On Sundays you will find a basket near the welcome table, with slips of paper available for you to write down prayer requests. You can ask for prayers for those who are ill, or in need of healing or encouragement of any kind, prayers for intentions, journeys, or projects, the birth or adoption of children, and prayers of thanksgiving for anything that needs celebrating. In other words, please ask for any prayers that are important to you and those you love. You may identify yourself and those for whom prayers are needed, but names are not necessary or required. These requests will be prayed for by our healing ministers both during the service and during the week for a period of one month. Keep an eye out for the basket!!

WHAT ARE YOU
GRATEFUL FOR?
In this time of fear and anxiety, it can be easy to miss the daily blessings that are right in front of us. Being grateful is not just for good times. Being grateful is even more important when fear sets a place at your table and heartbreak seems to be in your every breath. Because by being grateful we become aware of all the ways God is working in us. Being grateful is a part of our healing and our deliverance. Being grateful is where our best selves reside.
SHINE YOUR LIGHT

SUNDAY SCHOOL
Kids of all ages:
Please join us for Sunday school. We will meet during the first part of the service and then
re-join the service at the Peace.

Mark commented on Koa’s work, “Dude, that is so beautiful.”
Koa answered, “Thanks, I like yours too.”

Vivi - I love these stamps!
Andrea - I love how you placed them on your picture.

We also learned about some garden vegetables relevant to our pictures.
A DAY IN SUNDAY SCHOOL:
  • We thought about things we cannot see before we listened to a story.
  • Vivi - the wind, ghosts
  • Koa - Love; and we see the trees bend from the wind
  • Mark - Heaven. But I know what heaven looks like. (Andrea asks - I wonder…. Mark, how do you see heaven?) Heaven is a big green lawn with a bridge at the end. When we die, we go over the bridge, and we don’t fall; we go up. (Motions with his hands.) (Andrea - Is that where we meet Jesus?) And all the people who have died
  • We wondered about the Holy Spirit, and the words of Peace Jesus said to help his friends not feel sad about him leaving. And even though we can’t see Him, we know Jesus is with us always. God loves us.
  • We colored pages with the scripture and garden flowers; next week, we will make drawings to hang up in Gideon’s garden to give pictures and words for reflection.
  • We missed the timing to say the Our Father with the congregation - we’ll work on this timing - but we held out our hands to receive the prayer and prayed the Our Father together, bringing our hands to our hearts at the end.
  • AND we had a visit from Mark’s mom, Stacey, who brought Johnny up and some juice and gummy snacks for all to share - and bubbles if we wanted another activity sometime.
  • Vivi showed Johnny how to work the musical turtle. Johnny practiced walking and saying “mmm” with Andrea after each sip of juice. Johnny and Annalise made sounds on different textures around the room and talked about how they sounded and felt.
  • Mark brought “Catboy” and “Spiderman” to hold to help him listen and feel ok. Catboy is from a show that Mark, Koa, and Vivi all know! We, adults, need to catch up.
