Gary's Corner...
Bass fishing has really picked up the last couple of weeks. There are a lot of tournaments going on everywhere as the temps cool down. I’m getting a lot of fishing reports and videos of great topwater bites all around the country. There’s nothing like a great topwater bite and almost every angler will agree that topwater fishing rates really high on their list. Another great bite this time of year is crankbaits. As the water cools, the fish just seem to be far more in a chase mode. It happens every year and you’ll see a lot of tournaments won with a mix of topwater and crankbaits throughout the day. Don’t think topwater is a morning only “deal”, even as the water cools a lot in the next month or two. The bite really slows on topwater, but you’ll still get the quality bites that you’re looking for to win tournaments.

I’d like to give a big shout out to Nolan Williams of Mount St. Helens and their coach Doug Lane. Doug not only coaches the bass team but believes strongly in their education as well. Doug created a great competition with the anglers this year. The highest grade point average would win a Champion Series rod of their choice. There were several kids over the 3.5 mark but Nolan bested them all and finished with the top score of 3.9875. There are pics and info later in this newsletter but I just think it’s awesome on Doug’s part to make this competition and to have so many anglers in the running and to have a shot at it. Great job guys!!! Congrats!!!

As with everything nationwide this year, getting components or parts for almost anything has been a great challenge. We’re doing our best to keep our dealers and anglers happy. Most of our dealers say that we’ve been one of the better suppliers this year and we’ve opened many new accounts simply because we’ve had inventory. We still have some holes to fill and we’re still working on it, but many of our problem SKU’s are now in stock. So, if we can help with anything, give us a yell. Thanks!!!!
Nixon's Plan For Summer/Fall Transitional Bass
By David A. Brown

The Autumnal Equinox — one of two days when the sun is directly over the equator (also spring’s Vernal Equinox) — divides night and day into virtually even lengths. It’s a time of balance, but the weeks surrounding this seasonal transition from summer to fall can be more of a disjointed frustration fest.
Just ask Yamamoto pro Larry Nixon: “Probably the biggest concern is the amount of oxygen in the water. That’s what really changes fishing in the fall; if you get any cool nights, it changes that surface temperature and sometimes, you get turnovers.

“What happens is your surface temperature cools down and you get that revolving effect. The lighter, warm water wants to come to the top and the denser, cooler water wants to go down deep."

The Perfect Chatterbait Rod - DC 736CB GLASS
Take your fishing to the next level. Use a Dobyns rod and feel the difference.

Fishing rods historically have been made from many different things. Originally Bamboo rods, but also other types of woods such as elderberry and rosewood. These were known of as early in history as 1801. After WW II (or the Roswell incident) a huge step forward was the manufacture of fiberglass rods. Fiberglass is a composite material with good strength and flexibility. Thusly, the modern fishing rod was invented.

In the 1970s, more creative materials appeared with the carbon fibers so the carbon blanks were manufactured. Dobyns Rods uses these materials too.

However, the old reliable Fiberglass rod continues to hold the hearts of anglers knowing how forgiving it is for the fishermen making errors when battling their personal best.

Because of its quality and performance the Dobyns Champion XP Series DC 736CB GLASS is one of the leading Chatterbait and Spinnerbait rods manufactured today. The rod is a full 7’3 in length with a full cork handle and heavy action performance. Windy days are a pleasure to use the 736 and anywhere we have grass filled lakes, this rod shines.

I stress that there are many good fiberglass rods out there and many have been around for a long time in the sport of fishing, but none like the Dobyns XP 736 CB Glass. Put one to the try and feel the difference.

Pictured is a recent catch on the DC 736CB GLASS by Dobyns Rods Pro Staffer Howard Swarts. Howard has been with Dobyns Rods since 2007.

Dobyns Pro Donates To Highest GPA
This is Nolan Williams. Nolan in a member of the Mount St. Helens Bass Club as a Student Angler Federation angler. He is a sophomore in high school. In January, Dobyns Pro Staffer Doug Lane told all the SAF members that he would award the member with the top 2020 Grade Point Average a Dobyns Champion rod of their choice.
Nolan had a 3.9875 GPA for the year and picked the Champion DC 705CB which he is holding. They had several kids with over 3.5 GPA's. Doug told the guys that his priority as a Coach and Pro Staffer was to encourage excellence in education and to value being a good citizen and role model. Nolan and his other team mates made him proud. Nolan must be highly intelligent because he chose to fish Dobyns Rods products!

Congratulations Nolan!
Luke Johns - WWBT Angler Of The Year
By M.L. Anderson

Luke Johns is a relatively new member to Team Yamamoto. He’s been fishing the Wild West Bass pro-ams, team events, and college events, and is now fishing the Pro-Ams and the Apex Tour. In the College Series he won entries into the Pro-Ams on the co side, and asked them if he could change to the Pro side, even though he wasn’t a hundred percent sure he was ready. It turned out to be the right move and he qualified for the Apex tour as well that year, which is invitation only. In the 2021 Wild West Bass Pro-Ams, he became the youngest angler ever to win the Angler of the Year title.

Christopher Cox Wins NC Central Division Tournament
Congratulations to Dobyns Pro Staffer Christopher Cox who won the ABA, AFT Divison 17, NC Central tournament on the Tar/Pamlico River. Chris brought in a five-fish limit weighing in at 16.40lbs all while using his Dobyns Xtasy DRX 755C.
Rod Spotlight - DRX 722SF
DRX 722SF - The Xtasy 7’2” is our most popular model in this series for the dropshot technique. There are many anglers that make the dropshot technique their go to, every day way of fishing. There’s no doubt that dropshotting is super popular and it works everywhere. When the bite is tough, dropshotting can turn a miserable day into a good or even great day of fishing. So many anglers are after the “best” dropshot rod available for a technique they depend on. The DRX 722SF has proven to be one of the best available. We’ve had a lot of stocking issues because of its popularity and I’m working to fix this. This rod will handle the lightest dropshot weights of 1/16 oz to about 5/16 oz perfectly. It’s not just a dropshot rod, it’s a great spinning rod for most baits thrown on 5 to 8 lb test line. Retail is $549.99.

Dobyns Rods Pro Staffer Of The Month
Trey Harpel is one of our longest running staffers, he has basically been with Dobyns Rod Pro Staff since day two! Trey says he considers the Mississippi River STL his home lake. Trey is fairly well known in the fishing industry with his THKustom baits as well as his reel tune up business, TH Reel Tuning & Cleaning.  Trey says “Between winning a boat in Texas on a lake I’ve been to and having my baits featured in BASSIN magazine” are among his career highlights.

Trey says “my most memorable fish would be catching my first double digit 10.02 in N MO..
Pitching/skipping a jig”. I asked which rods he couldn’t live without and Trey said “Xtasy Series DRX 755C for sure as it’s my go to jig/ Texas rig rod. Champion XP Series DC 805 CB as I don’t deep crank enough, but it’s so enjoyable when they crush the bait.”
Trey and his wife are in the process of hitting all the NTL parks in the US, his second hobby is hiking.  Check out Trey on social media and take a look at his baits, THKustoms

Dobyns Rods Fan Of The Month
Matt Elliot
Home waters- Lake Smith and Little Creek Reservoir

I have been using Dobyns Rods for almost 3 years now. I was first drawn to Dobyns Rods when I was in search of a dedicated frog/flipping rod. After reading many reviews on rods, the one rod that had an overwhelming praise was the Fury Series FR 735C. After purchasing the 735 and fishing it a couple times, I immediately knew I was changing my entire rod lineup to strictly Dobyns. The way Gary has built each series of rods, I am able to find a rod that matches my style and apply it to technique specific applications. I was drawn to Dobyns because of the great customer service and how Gary interacts with his customers.

My bucket list fishery would have to be either Sam Rayburn or Chickamauga Lake. They have big fish; I like big fish.  I began bass fishing in the summer of 2017, which led to my passion for kayak fishing mid-2018. I do not have any major accomplishments yet in my career, but the biggest accomplishment for me has been to compete and place in local kayak and boat tournaments. I am still relatively new to the sport and my goal to accomplish soon is to compete on the regional and national level kayak trails.

My most memorable fish would have to be from October of 2020. I caught my PB using the Fury Series FR 705CB throwing a Berkley Frittside. The one bait that will be tied on all year round is a jig. This has been my go too technique ever since I purchased the Champion XP Series DC 744C.  The biggest weakness I have as an angler is utilizing spinning gear and improving my finesse applications. I can become impatient when learning new techniques and need give them enough time to really learn them.

The Dobyns rod that I can’t live without would have to be the Champion Extreme HP Series DX 743C. This rod is very versatile, has amazing sensitivity, and has a nice soft tip, which is excellent for kayak fishing. The 743HP has become my favorite rod for senkos, texas rigs, or any other bottom contact application. The rod that I need to use more frequently is the Champion XP Series DC 703SF. I need to make a better effort to become more comfortable with finesse fishing. My hobbies outside of bass fishing are spending time with my family. My lovely wife and I recently brought our first child into the world, and I enjoy spending time with them when not at work or fishing.

Just wanted to say thank you guys for reaching out. I am truly honored. You guys do such an amazing job top to bottom and just wanted to say I truly appreciate everything your company does for the fishing community.
Lindgren Takes 2nd On Upper Mississippi River
Congratulations to Dobyns Pro Staffer Rich Lindgren for taking 2nd at the 2021 TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Northern Regional on the Upper Mississippi River.

Originally an alternate for the Minnesota team, Lindgren said he is happy to be making his third trip to the Nation Championship.

“I got my stuff together in 24 hours' notice and made it down here. Put in three superlong days of practice and I wasn’t on a lot, but I saw just enough,” the Lakeville, Minn., native said. “The Minnesota team works together and the clues I got in the meeting along with what I saw in practice, I was able to unlock it in the tournament.”

Rod Spotlight - STP 700SF
STP 700SF - The Sierra 7’ Trout and Panfish rod was introduced in 2020. It’s proven to be an excellent rod for trout, crappie, and bluegill. The blanks are very small in diameter, being about pencil sized at the butt. The tips are very light and are solid carbon material. The sensitivity is off the charts. These rods will throw 1/32 oz baits very easily. They’re 7-foot ultra-light action rods rated for lines in 2 to 6 lb test. I’ve used these while testing with 1/8 oz dartheads and 2.8 Keitech swimbaits and was amazed at how light and sensitive these rods are. We’ve been out of stock on these for a while, but have them back in now. If you’re looking for an awesome ultra-light rod for panfish or trout, give these a look. Retail is $159.99.
